High Earnock

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

High Earnock is a private housing estate in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

High Earnock is situated in the west of Hamilton and was built between 1950 and 1985; it has views across Clydesdale towards Motherwell, Shotts, Hillhouse and Little Earnock.

The community is served by Townhill Primary School and Earnock High School pupil rolls of around 450 and 850 respectively. Earnock High is controversially to be closed and its pupils relocated to a new school in Blantyre called Calderside Academy. Calderside is due for completion in August 2007, ready for the start of the 2007-2008 school session. The controversy surrounding the closure of Earnock High stems from the sale of land for new housing. A new residential area consisting of houses and flats are presently being completed on land at the bottom of Wellhall Road. Public sentiment of this issue was so strong that three people stood for election in the South Lanarkshire Council: two of them won their wards. One of the councillors was a well known teacher at Earnock High School, Tommy Gilligan.

Amenities are scarce in High Earnock - the overwhelming majority of buildings are privately owned houses. Among the few are Filipetti's, a small convenience store, the Golden Fry, a chip shop and Aldi's, a discount supermarket built on the land of the old Safeway/Morrison's. Churches in the area include the Church of Scotland Hillhouse Parish Church and the Catholic St Ninian's although both of these are actually in Hillhouse. Earnock shares with Hillhouse the 'Earnock and Hillhouse Community Centre', which has been refurbished recently. It features, among other things, a toddler group and a large library with internet access. Earnock is also home to the Philips Lighting Factory which is a major employer in the area. A large part of the factory has now been demolished and the land used for private housing.

The area has transport links with Hamilton town centre and a half-hourly direct bus service to Glasgow and other destinations accessible via Hamilton town centre.
