Higashiomi, Shiga

Higashiōmi (東近江市; -shi) is a city located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
As of 2005, the city has an estimated population of 77,362 and the density of 243 persons per km². The total area is 318 km².
The city was founded on February 11, 2005 upon the merging of Yokaichi city and the towns of Eigenji, Gokasho, Aito, and Koto which were thereby dissolved.
The adjacent lakeside town of Notogawa and Gamo town merged into Higashi Omi on Jan. 1, 2006.
