Hi Ho Silver Lining

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi Ho Silver Lining is a still-popular 1960s rock song, written by Scott English and Larry Weiss, first released as a single in March 1967 by The Attack and a few days later by Jeff Beck, whilst Jeff Beck's version charted. It has been re-recorded many times (most recently in 2006) and retains its popularity on the dance-floor despite not being a big hit at the time of its original release, failing to even make the top 10 on the UK singles chart.

In the United Kingdom, the song is famous for being the anthem of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC (Wolves)and Aston Villa F.C.. It is played at their home grounds of Molineux and Villa Park as the players run out onto the pitch with supporters singing 'Hi Ho Wolverhampton/Aston Villa'. The tune is also an unofficial anthem for the city of Wolverhampton as the song is often played in bars, clubs and pubs in the city with people singing the same modified chorus lyrics as are sung at Molineux. The song was also played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff after Wolves' First Division Playoff final victory against Sheffield United in 2003.

John Leyton released (on Crash Records on May 15, 2006) a song for the World Cup Hi Ho, Come On England, based on the melody of the English/Weiss song.

Other recorded versions exist by Black Lace, Slade, Hello.
