IMDb profile |
Hey Arnold! is an American animated television series that aired from October 7, 1996 until June 8, 2004 on Nickelodeon. Created by Craig Bartlett, and based on his clay animation shorts on Sesame Street and comics, the show stars grade-schooler Arnold, who lives with his grandparents Phil and Gertrude, proprietors of the Sunset Arms boarding house. (His doctor parents Stella and Miles went missing while on an international rescue mission). The series takes place in Hillwood City, a fictional locale resembling parts of Brooklyn, New York and Seattle. Hillwood City itself is located in Washington State. It aired on CBS in 2002 and ended in September 2004.
"Hey Arnold!" debuted as an animated short for the Nickelodeon film "Harriet The Spy" in 1996, and it currently airs regularly on the Nicktoons Network from 11:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M. It can also be seen on Nicktoons TV UK, back to back, between 2:00-3:00 PM each weekday afternoon.

[edit] Recurring Jokes
[edit] The Gilligan Cut
One of the series' recurring jokes is the frequent use of a gag originally seen in Gilligan's Island, known as the Gilligan Cut [1]. (known in the United Kingdom as the "Bicycle Joke") For example:
- Arnold: Stinky, we are not calling our go-cart the Mauve Avenger.
(frame changes)
I can't believe we called our go-cart the Mauve Avenger.
("Grand Prix", Arnold decides to take parts from Eugene's totalled go-cart to fix his go-cart)
[edit] Brainy Gag
Another recurring gag involves Brainy:, in which whenever Helga attempts to secretly praise Arnold in a romantic fashion, Brainy happens to stand right behind her and wheeze down her neck. This usually ends with Helga backfisting Brainy in the nose.
In one episode, after Helga saw a child psychiatrist, the same situation happened but Helga decided not to hit Brainy. After a moment's hesitation, Brainy then hit himself in the face. In another episode, Helga kisses Brainy instead, after having been in an unusually very good mood.
[edit] Arnold's Name-teaser Gag
- Occasionally, the creators of the show will tease viewers with the revelation of Arnold's last name, only to pull back, either because it is not legible or the speaker is interrupted. An example of this includes in the episode "Fighting Families" (Which was a spoof to Family Double Dare, American Gladiators, and Family Feud), when the school is holding an assembly and the woman presenting the assembly announces that a student from the school will be selected to participate. While announcing Arnold's name she reveals she cannot read the last name.
Contest Lady: And the winner is Arnold... there seems to be a smudge over the last name.
Stinky: I reckon she means you, Arnold, on account of you're the only Arnold in the whole dang school.
Helga: Wait, what is his last name?
