[edit] Discussion

First, Hexagon, welcome to Wikipedia.

On Wikipedia talk:Tomorrow's featured article, you recently requested the Czech Republic as our daily featured article. As the name implies, in order to be the daily featured article, and article has to be 'promoted' to featured article first. You can make your nomination Wikipedia:featured article candidates (which explains the process). →Raul654 23:08, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] AD/BC

Actually AD <date> is the correct way to write it worldwide. Putting AD afterwards developed as a variant but technically AD <date> has always been correct. To understand, remember what AD means — the Year of Our Lord. So a sentence "In AD 1666 the Great Fire of London broke out" means "In the Year of Our Lord 1666 the Great Fire of London broke out." Putting it afterwards makes no grammatical sense: eg., "1666 in the Year of Lord the Great Fire of London broke out". I presume using AD afterwards simply evolved when people didn't use latin and weren't aware of what it meant, and so they simply applied the letters the same way as they did with BC. But as I say, AD <year> is not American English but in British-English, Hiberno-English, indeed in all forms of English. It just isn't use much any more except by those who are historians or learnt Latin but is not merely correct but actually the correct way to use it. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 03:52, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Shouldn't we use the most accepted variant? In this case <year> AD? -- Hexagon1 03:57, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Dual Citizenship map

Hello, I noticed that you uploaded this map and that the information for Mexico is gray. According to this site, Mexico does allow dual citizenship but mexican citizens born in Mexico or to Mexican parents abroad are considered Mexican within Mexico and must carry proof of both citizenships. They also do not allow loosing of your citizenship, meaning you can't renounce it. I don't know under which category this would fall (yellow or red). Seems more like a red to me. Hope this help. -- PRueda29 / Ptalk29 / Pcontribs29 12:47, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

I'd say that's red too, according to the document they allow something called dual nationality but not dual citizenship, and dual nationals cannot vote or stand for office. As I understand it Mexican citizens DO lose citizenship upon acquiring another (but retain nationality), so yeah, that's red. Thanks for telling me, hexagon1 13:04, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
The reason I got rid of the map is because a lot of the "facts" are wrong like Finland DOES allow dual nationality, since 2003 in the Nationality Act 2003 (See Finnish nationality law and [1]), however in Norway DOESN'T allow dual-nationality (see [2]), except for certain cases. Germany does allow dual nationality (See German nationality law) only to citizens under 23, after that they have to decide get which citizenship to have. 159753 11:16, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

Please look at my last edit to the Cabrini College wikipedia site. I was reverting it back to the "normal" site but you changed it back to nonsense. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 129.32.171.169 (talkcontribs).

My appologies, the page had been vandalized many times in the preceeding few minutes, I lost track of who did what, and what the article was supposed to be. The mistake was rapidly corrected by other members of the Counter Vandalism Unit. [edit] Interiot.js

I've made some modifications to User:Haza-w/Interiot.js, which you may wish to reflect in your monobook.js - the only main difference is that I've changed the appendChild function to an insertBefore, which means that it should work in all cases (now, it only works in some skins). If it works fine for you, then there should be no problem in keeping it as it is. haz (user talk)e 21:21, 10 March 2006

Thanks! I'll update mine soon. There should be a URL that has the most up-to-date script, and you should just be able to <script src=" .... "> it. (Nevermind, you can just action=raw, apparently.) +Hexagon1 (talk) 03:18, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New caction tool

I'm pleased to inform you that my caction tool v2 is now released. To update to the new version, replace the link to the old version in your monobook.js with

{{subst:js|User:Haza-w/cactions.js}}

The reason I can't simply replace the old version is that the new one doesn't quite work for admins, and I'm still waiting for assistance before I completely roll it out.

Tell me what you think of it. If there are any bugs, then let me know, including your browser version in the report. Thanks, and I hope you like the new version! haz (user talk)e 16:12, 17 March 2006

Oh, thanks for that. I corrected that bug when testing for a Special: page but forgot for user/user talk pages. I'll fix it. I fixed the "(comment)" parsing bug that you mentioned earlier. Thanks for all the feedback! (By the way, TantalumTelluride prompted me to make a new version which removes the "history", "move" and "watch"/"unwatch" tabs and replaces them as links under "page options" – hope you like it.) haz (user talk)e 09:29, 19 March 2006
I've remodelled the location scanner so that it replaces any %3As with colons before searching for strings such as User: and Special: which should fix the problem. I've also added a purge link to page options. haz (user talk)e 10:32, 19 March 2006

Hi Hexagon1. I think you reported the "whitespace" bug in the caction tool, whereby a large blank area was added at the end of every page. I'm glad to inform you that the bug has been fixed. [edit] mexico

Yes, Mexico now allows dual citizenship with the US. I have several friends, either born in the US of Mexican parents, or born in Mexico, but who have lived in the US for a long time (legally, of course) who have recently acquired a second passport and are very excited at the prospect of feeling "whole" again now that they can claim two passports to match their dual identities. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Eudaimonia (talkcontribs).

Sure. Here is an article dealing with the tumultuous situation: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=32119 . Mexico legalized dual citizenship in 1998, then, as the article states, the "window closed" some time thereafter. In 2003, Mexico changed its consistution to continue to process requests for dual citizenship permanently. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Eudaimonia (talkcontribs).

[edit] Czech Republic

Do you live in the Czech Republic? I do. I don't want to get into edit warring. I think it's counterproductive. I'd rather collaborate constructively. Česko has its supporters and detractors here. A lot of people I've talked to don't like it and don't use it. Whatever Juro comes up with, it will have no bearing on English usage and it won't change the fact that Česko ("official" or not) is conspicuous by its absence in all kinds of official contexts. I've never seen it used in written form in a "real world" scenario. So the question is, why use a name that provokes lots of controversy and is avoided by practically everyone, when there's a perfectly good name that nobody objects to? --Smithfarm 15:17, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

You ask "who cares"... well, the Senate cared enough to hold a public hearing, and former President Vaclav Havel said he gets a feeling of "slugs crawling over him" whenever he hears the word "Česko - Czechia". And just based purely on usage (non-tabloid newspapers, publications, official documents, postage stamps, etc.), only the long form gets used, so people who want Wikipedia to mirror actual usage care, too. On the other hand, as I came to understand from reading the Senate hearing transcript, "Czechia" is evidence of the Czech nation's desire to create a unified national identity. The lack of a geographical name that everyone can agree on is a problem to some, at least! --Smithfarm 14:46, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] interiot.js

Thanks for using my "static link" JS. A tiny thing, though - I've just moved the page the script to User:Haza-w/interiot.js, making it lowercase so that it's sorted with my other JS and CSS files. "Microsoft Windows has been the target of functionality creep critisism, far outgrowing the features one would expect from an operating system."

The first part of the sentence is certainly true (whether the criticism is well-founded is another issue), but the second seems POV. There is no rule book that says an operating system must have a particular set of features and no more. Arganoid 14:21, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ecuadorian Dual Citizenship

Dear Hexagon,

Thanks for your message. I'm glad I got your attention pertaining to my little edit. I'm afraid I have no first hand sources for Ecuador's permission of dual citizenship, other than me personally. Allow me to explain.

My father is Swiss and my mother is Ecuadorian. I was born in Switzerland, and originally I only had Swiss citizenship. As I got older, I began to pester my parents, asking them why I only had a Swiss passport, and not an Ecuadorian one as well. The reason was, that Ecuador did not allow dual citizenship. One day however, the Ecuadorian Ambassador in Berne called us, rather excitedly, to inform us that a recent change in the laws of the land allowed dual citizenship. A month later, at age 10, I recieved my Ecuadorian passport.

If that does not suffice as evidence of Ecuador's allowance of dual citizenship, I shall try to find the specific law in the archives of the Ecuadorian legislative (should one be accesible online).

Hoping to hear from you soon. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.186.177.202 (talkcontribs).

I got the coordinates from the original (Image:Wm2006.png) just by using Paint Shop Pro. Any image editor will tell you which pixel you are pointing at. [edit] leave me alone

RE: I have restored this section, and I say it again, you may not remove warnings/blockings. If you want to change Wikipedia, being a vandal is not the right way to do so. Or start your own encyclopedia. +Hexagon1 (talk) 07:38, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

In the past week, I have had about 6 wikipedians, including yourself, modify my own talk page. First there was User:ed_g2s who deleted thousands of images without bothering to ask the author of the image about this. He kept changing my talk page, repeatedly.

Then there was User:9cds who revert my page after I kept the warning on my page.

Then there was Tony, who didn't like what I was writing about the hypocricy of some admins.

Then there was you, whose bias is obvious and who simply wants to make my life uncomfortable because of your disagreement with my views. Your actions, and the actions of others, reminded how post Soviet companies, who fall out of disfavor with the authorities, suddenly get inspected by the local fire marshal, the tax collector, etc. Dissent is always praised in countries like this, by people like yourself, but dissent in your own country and on wikipedia, is frowned down upon, and even crushed. Your hypocricy is incredible but sadly common.

And for the record. I created a fourth archive of messages here:

User_talk:Travb/Archive_4 with all of the warning messages you state that I am deleting. Tony reverted my page, protected it, and deleted all of my work which I had done, I am still in the process of rebuilding my page to the way it was. Please don't freak out if I decide to archive your important message. Need I remind you that the rules allow even outcasts such as myself to archive my own messages.

I await a self-righteous response condeming me for even suggesting that you are a hypocrite, and how you are only following the rules and admonishing me to do the same. Typical, very typical.

[edit] Ecuadorian passport

Dear Hexagon,

I doubt I'm seriously illegally travelling on a Swiss passport. In fact, I'm 100% sure I'm not. My father is a Swiss diplomat, and as such I, his son, also have one. So you see, it's rather impossible. I'd love to be able to satisfy your craving for citation, but you forget, Ecuador is a third world country. It doesn't have the infrastructure nor the money to upload all its legaslation, to make it accessible to all the world. So getting a copy of this legaslation to send to you will be impossible, since Ecuador does not have a mission here in Bucharest, Romania (where my father is currently posted). Though we are working on it.

Thank you. 85.186.177.202 11:01, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Red Cross

Hi, I have reverted your edit to Emblems of the Red Cross. As far as I can tell from brief googling, the Red Cross emblem is very much Christian, being a modification of the Swiss flag[4], which was derived from a flag having something to do with the Holy Roman Empire, representing its religion, Christianity[5]. (This is a bit vague; I’ll search more if you wish.) Thus, although the Red Cross emblem is not a direct derivation of the Christian emblem, it is close enough to count as a derivation for non‑Christians. I have, however, made a small change to indicate that the emblems aren’t actually organisationally connected to any religion. —xyzzyn 15:12, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Locations map

This picture sent shiver down my backbone. It is very, very distracting colorwise. Pavel Vozenilek 03:15, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

There are widely different opinions on value of aliasing (mostly concentrating on fonts).
I was adding current maps for over a year - will you be able/willing to replace them yourselves? I have enough of work of my own (a plan to create stub for every single village in CR).
The way I place the red point in my maps is unprecise (looking on large map and trying to make it the same) and I "reuse" single map for as many locations as possible (I am very lazy). My sloppiness would be much easier to spot on the (new) map. It may be possible to generate the maps automatically but this may mean huge demand on Commons and lot of work to handle places of the same name.
There was an attempt to create another map (dozen of maps still lie in Commons) but the guy didn't use them anywhere and stopped after while.
What may, in some distant future, on more technologically advanced WP, happen is that the pics are templates and the template expands according to individual user settings. This would enable experimentation and easier replacement. Pavel Vozenilek 03:33, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Btw, if you sometimes find a time to translate article about some town/village/castle/scientist/technical curiosity/whatever from Czech Wiki it would be much welcomed. I try to but I am quite limited in time and being mere programmer I lack domain specific terminology for other areas.
AFAIK there's no coordination between Czech and English Wiki in dealing with CR related articles. I occasionally try to lure those experts appearing on cs: to translate their texts to English. Pavel Vozenilek 03:51, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Your going ahead and changing the article names without seeking consensus isn't appreciated, especially considering that you made the decision to do so without any kind of support from regular editors of the article. Your opinion as a Wikipedian is welcome, of course, but as someone who doesn't do any kind of editing regarding Microsoft-related product pages, you really need to be significantly more considerate of the opinions of other editors who invest a large proportion of their time here on closely related articles. This isn't a WP:OWN thing, this is a local knowledge thing. Remember, consensus is a cornerstone of how we operate here... I shouldn't need to explain that to you. Warrens 03:12, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

You should have gone for the moves with the "Requested Moves" path, as it was clearly disputed. So a vote would have been better. --soUmyaSch 05:40, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it does. If you use the Wikipedia input [[YYYY-MM-DD]], the date preferences set in your preferences will automatically change that to Month Day, Year or Day Month Year. Hence using [[CURRENTYEAR-CURRENTMONTH-CURRENTDAY]] (or is it CURRENTDATE?) will work. NSLE (T+C) at 11:50 UTC (2006-05-30)

[edit] My RfA

Thanks
Hexagon1/archive1, thank you for participating in my RfA. Unfortunately, a great number of oppose voters felt that I lacked experience, and a consensus was not reached (the final tally was 30/28/10). Perhaps I will try again in another few months when I have a few more edits under my belt. If I do, I hope I can count on your support. Thanks again! Cool3 talk 20:12, 2 June 2006 (UTC) (UTC)

[edit] Re: Cactions

Have added Mathbot link. Many thanks for feedback. Have serious debugging of script to do as per TantalumTelluride; should be fun! (Perhaps an explanation for why this is such a short and concise message!) See you around. Keep the recommendations coming. Cheers, haz (user talk) 17:38, 5 June 2006
