Hexatonic scale
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music a hexatonic scale is a scale with six (hexa) degrees. One example is the whole tone scale, also known as the interval cycle 2 (C2). Another is the "augmented" scale, C D# E G A♭ B.
[edit] Blues Scale
Another example is the "blues" scale: I #II IV #IV V bVII. A prime example of this scale is the melody of Tom Harrell's composition "Terrestris."
This blues scale is often described as the minor pentatonic scale, I #II IV V bVII, with an added `blue note', the #IV (a tritone), which effectively makes it hexatonic. Due to the nature of the blues scale, it fits over either minor or major chord progessions.
