Hester Shaw

Hester Shaw is a fictional character in Philip Reeve's Hungry City Chronicles. She is fifteen when the series begins, and suffers from terrible facial scarring and an unpleasant disposition.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Hester is one of the most complex characters in the series. She harbours an intense hatred for Valentine in Mortal Engines, but forgives him when she sees how much he loves his daughter (unknown to her at the time, Hester is also his daughter)and is quick to kill Lost Boys kidnapping her daughter. She separates from Tom in Infernal Devices after he finds out that she sold Anchorage to the Huntsmen of Arkangel. In A Darkling Plain, she roams the Sahara with Shrike for half a year before being reunited with Tom as they try to save the world again. She tells him that she is Valentine's daughter, and seems remorseful that it is her genes that allow her to kill and steal without remorse.

It is notable that Reeve never condemns Hester's violent nature.
