Following the reconquest from the Vandals in 533, Carthage became the civil and military capital of the prefecture of Africa. This issue has been dated with indiction years, rather than regnal years, this being part of a fifteen-year cycle used by the Byzantine fiscal authorities and marking the intervals at which tax schedules were revised.
