Hero of the Hourglass is the 8th episode of the second season of American Dragon: Jake Long.
[edit] Synopsis
Jake fights against the Huntsmaster at Yankee Stadium over an ancient amulet that has the power of time travel. Though he succeeds in keeping it out of the Huntsclan's hands, he falls into the stands and transforms back into a human where he catches a fly ball on live television. Until this point, Jake's father believe he was studying at the library. After his father grounds him, Jake complains to his mother about the difficulty he has performing Dragon duties, and trying to hide his powers from his father. His mother shows him some old high school mementos of hers, among them an unopened letter she wrote to him while in high school confessing her family's dragon heritage. The letter is dated June 27, 1986, and she was planning to slip it into his locker but didn't have the courage to do so. Jake decides to go use the amulet to go back to June 27, 1986, despite Fu Dog's advice against it. From this episode, we learn that Jake's parents are named John and Susan, and that Millard Fillmore Middle School was a high school in the 1980's. Both plan to go to Jones Beach to watch Haley's Comet shoot across the sky. That is until Jake found the letter his mother was going to give John, and slips it in his locker, causing him to break up with her momentarily. Realizing that he may have done more harm than good, both he and Fu Dog try to convince them to get back together. Jake follows Susan home and finds out Lao Shi is quite pleased that they broke up, preferring that she date people from the magical world, such as Jake, who randomly goes under the assumed name "Beyonce Timberlake," and claims to be the Canadian Dragon.
Meanwhile in the lair of the Huntsclan, some huntsmen are monitoring television and radio signals for any activity related to the existence of magical creatures, when they find John Long calling a radio talk show psychiatrist regarding his break up with Susan. When he mentions that she was a dragon, they immediately go on alert. Before they can track him down, Fu Dog sneaks over to his apartment and steals a Rubik's Cube-type toy leading him to Jones Beach. At the beach, Jake tries to convince John to stay with Susan with a family photograph. John doesn't believe him, and makes a sarcastic remark about Fu being a talking dog, Fu does just that, which causes him to faint. Just then the young Huntsman finds Jake & Fu Dog on the beach, and both fight each other. The Huntsman later kidnaps John Long and brings him on board a private submarine. Jake, Fu Dog, and Susan return to New York City to convince Lao Shi to help them rescue him. The Huntsclan, tries to make John confess that he knows of the existence and whereabouts of Dragons, using elaborate torture instruments, and an unidentified creature hidden in a pit. Terrified, he throws them off with confessions to other bad deeds, that have no relevance to what they're interested in. Remembering the photograph that Jake showed him he blatantly refuses to tell them anything, thereby convincing Lao Shi that he's worthy of his daughter. Jake and Lao Shi team up and battle the Huntsclan. During the battle, John prevents Susan from getting hit by debris, but gets hit on thr head and knocked unconscious(again), and the Hutnsman falls in the pit. He survives the wrath of the creature after the heroes escape, and as other Huntsclan members make fun of him, they suddenly find his voice has changed, and he's very angry!
Jake, Susan, and Lao Shi managed to convince John that he dreamed the whole incident. They finally watch Haley's Comet on Jones Beach as Jake leaves for 2006. Unfortunately, he's caught on camera as the young couple are getting their picture taken by a professional photographer. Both watch the comet, and disagree over the pronounciation of the name, which as it turns out is the origin of Jake's little sister's name. When Jake arrives back in 2006, he finds that his mother has somehow convinced his father into easing up on his punishment, until suddenly she finds out from one of her old high school photographs that Jake was time traveling on a school night, and she grounds him once again.
