Hermann Niehoff

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Niehoff was a German General during World War II. Niehoff was the garrison commander of Festung Breslau during the Battle of Breslau.

From 13 February to 6 May 1945, Breslau was besieged by the Soviet 6th Army. The 6th Army was part of the Soviet 1st Ukrainian Front commanded by Marshal Ivan Konev. To oppose the Soviets, Niehoff had approximately one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand German Army, Home Guard, and Hitler Youth troops. Niehoff's over-matched forces held Breslau for more than two months and much of the city was destroyed during the siege.

On 6 May, only two days before the unconditional surrender of Germany, Niehoff surrendered Festung Breslau to the Soviets.

Hermann Niehoff was a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. He received this honor on 6 March 1945 as commander of the 371st Infantry Division (371. Infanterie-Division).
