Herlufsholm kostskole

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herlufholm Kostskole is a Danish boarding school located in Næstved. It was founded in 1565 by Birgitte Gøye. Her husband, Herluf Trolle, who was an admiral in the Danish navy, died in a naval battle against the Swedes.

The First headmaster of the school was Peterius Resenius.

Trolle Morgen (literally "Troll Morning") and Fugleskydning ("Bird-shooting") are the two biggest events at the school.

[edit] Boarding School

Today it is the only school in Denmark with a school uniform, and has roughly 500 students. The number of boarding students are roughly equal to day students. Most the boarding students come from Denmark, except for those studyig for the IB diploma, most of whom come from abroad.

[edit] Herlovianer Sprog

A unique thing about the school is that the students have their own language called Herlovianer Sprog. Words are obtained by simply taking the first and last syllables of a word and making a portmanteau of the two. So Skole Bygning ("school building") becomes Skygning.

[edit] Trolle Morgen

Trolle Morgen is on January 14, the day that Herluf Trolle was born, and is a major event, as many old students return to the school on that day.

[edit] Fugleskydning

Fugleskydning is an old tradition, where the students shoot down two wooden birds that are placed on top of a long pole. Furthermore, it is the day where class 3G (the seniors) theoretically get to run the school, and therefore they form a government. In 2006 the 203rd government was formed. Traditionally the two boarding students, who have been there the longest (male and female) become the Prime Minister and Prime Minister's wife. Other important posts are the Sekretær Sandstryer, ("hoarse secretary"), who yells out whose turn it is to shoot at the bird. The Fanebærer ("flag-carrier") and Fane-vogter ("flag-guard"), the people who carry the school flag and protect it respectively, are also prestigious posts.

[edit] Schedule for Fugleskydning

[edit] 09:00 - Procession

Students march out of the old school building, Skygningen, to the front of the principal's house where he gives the big wooden bird to 3G, and the little wooden bird to the 9th graders. Then the procession continues around the Kloster Bygning or monastery, to the side where the Forstander or school protector yells "hurrah for the Bird Shoot". The procession then continues into Ny Have ("New Garden") where a square is formed and the Fugleskydnings song is sung.

[edit] 10:00

Parents class meetings, selection of parent representatives.

[edit] 13:00

Beer sales to 2G and 3G commence (three beers per person).

[edit] 14:00

Football game against the Alumni.

[edit] 17:00

Birds are shot down by this time and a bird king for both birds is found.

[edit] 19:00- Bird Shoot

The bird shoot party starts. It ends at 23:15 with fireworks paid for by 3G.

[edit] 23:30

The Melle fest Party is held in the old monk cells for 3G until 00:30.
