[edit] About HCS

Heritage Christian school was founded in 1965 by Walter Best. He gave the school a 38.5 acre tract of land to build a school. The land is situated inside Interstate 465 on the southeast corner of State Road 37 (Binford Blvd) and 71st Street. Since receiving the land Heritage Christian has built 5 buildings on the property that include: an elementary school building, a middle school building, a high school building, a fine arts building that is connected to the high school and middle school, and a gymnasium. Heritage Christian School has approximately 1600 students and the average class size has grown to around 120 students per grade.

Heritage Christian School was founded as a non denominational school and is still that way today. They are dedicated to evangelical teaching of the Word of God to all ages of students through chapels with middle school and high school students with speakers from the faculty and outside ministry around the surrounding areas. Also, with more youth oriented activities for the elementary students.

[edit] Elementary

Elementary includes grades pre-kindergarten - fourth grade and includes full and half day pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. The purpose as stated by the Heritage Christian website is:

"It is our purpose to establish a school where students may obtain a sound Christian education that allows children to know that God is the central source of knowledge, attitudes, and skills. We believe that teaching and learning should be accomplished through the cooperative efforts of teachers and parents; therefore, your participation is essential and welcome.

The primary emphasis in elementary school is placed on the student’s attainment of the basic skill in language, including word attack reading skills, and mathematics. More specific grade level requirements and curriculum is available by contacting the elementary office."

[edit] Intermediate School

This includes grades 5 and 6. It is to develop students and transition from elementary to middle school.

[edit] Middle School

The middle school includes grade 7 and 8, and its purpose is to further students and parents through the physical, emotional, academic and most important spiritual transition that occurs during these developemental years of childhood.

[edit] High School

The high school includes grade 9 through 12 and has an enrollment of 473 students. It is a college preparatory high school and its main mission is to teach the Word of God and prepare students for college.

[edit] Athletics

Heritage Christian joined the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) in 2003 after years of trying to get the vote required to get in. They needed the school board to vote to apply for the IHSAA and because of the Christian heritage many of the board for a long time did not feel it was appropriate to join the IHSAA. They also are members of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).
