Herbert Kegel

Herbert Kegel (born 29 July 1920 in Dresden, died 20 November 1990 in Dresden) was a German conductor.

  • 1935-1940: Studied at the Dresden Conservatory (conducting with Karl Böhm and composition with Boris Blacher.
  • 1946-1949: Conductor in Pirna and Rostock
  • 1948-1979: Associated with Leipzig Radio Orchestra and Choir
  • 1960: Principal conductor: Leipzig Symphony Orchestra and Choir
  • 1977-1985: Principal conductor: Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra
  • 1990: Committed suicide

Herbert Kegel was married to the Italian soprano Celestina Casapietra from 1966 to 1983. Their son Björn Casapietra is active as a singer, moderator and actor.
