[edit] User page blanking

I presume that you have no objection to unprotecting and reverting TTON's userpage, having archived the discussion? Thanks, Mark Richards 14:24, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Also, can you explain why you keep blocking Leo Trollstoy? Apart from the fact that he annoys you, of course. Thanks, Mark Richards 14:25, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Yes I do have an objection, it contains vandalism as I have said time and time again. I archived the page because it was 35k long.
I have been blocking Leo Trollstoy because he admits to trolling on his user page.
These are no-brainers. You seem more interested in "winning your argument" than any actual improvement in the Wikipedia.
-Hephaestos|§ 14:53, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

No Heph, your mud slinging is not justification for your actions. There is no concensus for blocking people for that reason, I can see nothing that he has done that warents it. The page does not contain vandalism, as you know. I am interested in respect for community norms, which, I think, is far more important than your vendeta against these users. I think that if you want to act against community concensus, the obligation is on you to put it up for a poll. The many 'troll polls' lately appear to offer no concensus for this kind of thing. Thanks, Mark Richards 15:04, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Fine then, if you're too damn lazy to do it. - Hephaestos|§ 15:20, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

See User talk:Leo Trollstoy

No Heph, as usual, you are not interested in community norms, only your own agenda. Please read 1. That is what I mean, not trying to organise a lynch mob. Mark Richards 15:34, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Please stop pretending that you are interested in the least in community norms, and thank you for ceasing to call the community a "lynch mob". - Hephaestos|§ 15:39, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Your abusive tone does not cover up the facts. I am trying to promote community norms, and support the real poll on this issue that is ongoing. I will abide by the communities decision on that matter. You, however, seem to want to pre-empt the issue, posting lynch polls, undermining discussion on the bigger issue. Stop it please. Mark Richards 15:43, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Heh. Thanks I guess. :) - Hephaestos|§ 04:41, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Heph - I regret that anyone conducted that foolish and pointless poll, and oppose that kind of thing in principle. I want to make clear that, however heated we might get over issues we disagree on, I believe you are acting in good faith. Yours, Mark Richards 05:42, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I'm taking Erich's advice, so let's shake hands and make up. Couldn't hurt. :) - Hephaestos|§ 06:10, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

For sure - I think we could both use that. See you around, ;) Mark Richards 01:17, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Neutrality admin poll

Hello, I didn't see the fuss about my vote until just now. Since it's closed now I have responded here [2] and here [3]. pir 11:06, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Methinks thou dost protest too much. :) But that's by the by, I notice nobody's blocked your account.
You make some very salient points on Erich's talk page; one of the main problems may be a confusion with honest dissidence and simple internet trolls. There's a large difference. - Hephaestos|§ 14:00, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)
thanks for your comments, Heph. Wikipedia is for me not only an open-content encyclopedia, it is also a social experiment, an inspiring model for how people can organise and work together freely and productively without much hierarchy. I really care about these issues. True I do protest a lot. I guess that's just a personality trait of mine. I do understand what a troll is, and I do think that Wikipedia needs to find a better way of dealing with them (see e.g. [4],[5], [6], [7]). In practice however it is very easy to extend the category of troll to dissident - honest contributors sometimes become quite upset and so determined that they start to behave like trolls. I have seen quite a few valuable contributors do this (they are mostly people I disagree with, I don't think I've done it). While this is a serious mistake, they should not be banned. The difference between troll and dissident is mainly their intention. There's no way of determining a contributor's intention with certainty.pir 14:26, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi Hephaestos ! Somebody (you ?) created 3 users count today on fr:WP (Utilisateur:Bastard Boy, Utilisateur:Bastardo, Utilisateur:Bastard) linked to your own page. I listed them on pages à supprimer ([8]), because they're insulting. Are they your sock puppets ? Is it vandalism ? Could you please tell us what you think about it ? I can't really determine from that exchange what it is you are asking me to comment on, and I have plenty of disputes of my own running so I would rather not get involved in any others. [edit] 50 State Quarter images

Here's some info I found on the Mint's website: The United States Mint will not object to use of the obverse or reverse design of any 50 State Quarters® Program coin approved by the Secretary of the Treasury, subject to the following conditions:

1. Quarter designs and credits may not be used in any way that could mislead or deceive the public or imply that the United States Mint, the Department of the Treasury, or the United States Government sponsors, endorses, approves, or is associated with (a) the product or service in which the design is used; (b) the creators or distributors of the product or service; or (c) any other nonfederal entity, person, activity, product, or service.

2. When practicable, high-resolution quarter images for reproduction should be obtained directly from the United States Mint by download from the Mint's online Pressroom Image Library (accessible from http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom ). The United States Mint cannot honor requests for camera-ready artwork or other reformatting.

3. When a quarter reverse design obtained from any United States Mint source is reproduced for publication, credit should be given as follows: "United States Mint image." The credit should be placed next to the quarter design reproduction. The following entry may be used instead if a credit page is provided: "Quarter-dollar coin image [or images] from the United States Mint."

4. The quarter design's use is not inconsistent with the Congressional findings and purposes of the 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act or with other applicable laws.

This is for quarters. Don't know about the Golden Dollar.

Take it as you will. -- iHoshie 00:10, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I;m sorry to add even more to your already full plate but would you take a look at User:Woolysock. He/she doesn't seem particularly threating at the moment but he/she is quite blantant about his/her intentions. Blocking is an obvious no at this point, and they haven't done much vandalsim, yet. What's your take on Jimbo's unbanning of Michael? I have repeatedly requested that he be made to apologize to you before being unbanned, but my request has been ignored. RickK 22:01, Sep 3, 2004 (UTC)

I think it would be a dumb idea to unban him, naturally. One Michael Garcia "apologized" to me via email; do I buy it? No. Especially when he continues to sign me up for music-related websites behind my back by using my email address. - Hephaestos|§ 02:08, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Pekeapoo

Is there a chance of getting a larger/clearer photo of the Pekeapoo? The photo you put up is a little on the fuzzy side (well, yes, the dog *is* fuzzy, but that's not what I meant) and also seems a bit pinkish. Just wondering whether you still had access to the dog--? Elf | Talk 19:27, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I've been going through my old photos of my old dogs, and the things I've learned about taking photos since the '70s and '80s... I have no really good photos of my dogs from back then, and I wish I did. Elf | Talk 16:20, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Covering the bases

On 29 MAR 04 you left a warning on User talk:64.94.49.253. The edit history for that IP now only goes back to 23 AUG 04. The current anon using that IP is making positive contributions and I assume is a different person. I left him a welcome message, but figured I would overwrite the warning from March so the productive anon using this IP doesn't have to have it on his talk page. It is still available in the page history, but since I effectively removed a warning you had posted, I wanted to inform you. Best regards. SWAdair | Talk 09:07, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Main passes of the alps.

You appear to be the author of this article, so I'm asking you.... what is the col de l'argentiere? This pass is supposed to lie in the Western Alps (westernmost one...) but I cannot find any alpine pass of that name. It should be in France, I guess from the order in southern French Alps, but I've never seen 'col de l'Argentiere' anywhere on a map.

This must but an old, out of use name for the col de Larche / colle della Maddalena [on the Italian side is the town of Argentera], wich qualifies as a major pass, but I'm not sure. Could you please name the valleys leading to it, majors towns or any other feature enablening s/o to identify this pass correctly. This could also enable me to write a stub of the corresponding article, as I know this region quite well.

If you could also identify the source (Is it Britannica 1911?) to keep a mention of the old / incorect (?) name, that would be cool.

Thanks in advance,

JB

[edit] A humble request for your services

I have just about every Supreme Court case article on my watchlist from having edited them at least once, so I noticed your contribution (however small) to Dred Scott v. Sanford. From reading your talk page, you seem to be a bit busy with arguments over blocking and controversial Wikipolicy, but I thought I might be able to tear you away for a moment.

I have recently started a project to improve the quality and consistency of United States Supreme Court case articles on Wikipedia. Your user page says you are mostly a copyeditor and as luck would have it, I could really use a couple good copyeditors.

With all the additions to articles that this Project will create, I could also greatly use the expertise of the son of an English teacher. Many people will be adding large amounts of content, but those same people may not often look over (or have the ability to look over) their contributions for grammatical errors.

I'm sure you are busy with your own things, but you say you copyedit random articles. I would just ask for your help by making those random articles about Supreme Court cases.

The project page is located here: United States Supreme Court Case Article Improvement Project.

Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

[edit] The Recycling Troll

Hi Heph - I feel rotten about doing this to you but i feel it's for the best. I've unblocked this user. I know what it feels like to have someone follow you around, it's creepy and annoying, -but not a blockable offence as far as I am aware. You said he was a banned user, yet you didn't say which banned user he was. You didn't post anything on his talk page explaining why he was blocked. You didn't post any thing on his user page saying "This is banned user so and so". And most strangely of all you only blocked him for a month, when sockpuppets are usually blocked indefinitly. Anyway those are the reasons I unblocked him. I'll keep an eye on his contributions, and reblock him if he does anything wrong. Theresa Knott (The torn steak) 13:36, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] User page protection

I am sending this message to a group of seasoned users whose opinions I respect. My aim is not to draw you into a dispute, but to canvass opinion on a contentious area of policy. If you have a few minutes to spare, please see the debate currently under way at Wikipedia talk:Protection policy, with particular reference to user page protection. For some reason, I seem to have fallen foul of a group of sysops who have made it their business to stamp out the practice of protecting one’s own user page. A sensible (in my opinion) proposal has been made to amend the policy, and I would be grateful if you would add your view, assuming you have one. Cheers. Deb 13:28, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)

You may remember that I coordinated the previous two elections, for the board, and for the arbitration committee. I am willing to coordinate this election as well, and have asked Elian to assist. My policy is to be entirely neutral, and to ensure this, I will not be voting myself (I didn't vote in previous elections either). All results will be announced following the final count. Please answer on my talk page. Danny 01:06, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

I've "started" the Free the Rambot Articles Project which aims to get users to release all of their contributions to the U.S. state, county, and city articles under the CC-by-sa 1.0 and 2.0 license (at minimum) or into the public domain if they prefer. A secondary goal is to get those users to release ALL of their edits for ALL articles. I've personally chosen to multi-license all of the rambot and Ram-Man contributions under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License so that other projects, such as WikiTravel, can use our articles. I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all your contributions (or at minimum those on the geographic articles) so that we can keep most of the articles available under the multi-license. Many users use the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or even MultiLicensePD for public domain) on their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I understand, but I thought I'd at least ask, just in case, since the number of your edits is in the top 50 most. If you do want to do it, simply just copy and paste one of the above two templates into your user page and it will allow us to track those users who have done it. For example:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain (which many people do or don't like to do, see Wikipedia:Multi-licensing), you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD -- Ram-Man 15:34, Nov 24, 2004 (UTC)

Quoth: I'd like to license my text contributions as PD, but I would like photographs I've taken myself and uploaded to be CC-by-SA. How would I go about wording that
I agree to multi-license all of my text contributions into the public domain as described below:
MultiLicensePD
I agree to multi-license all the photographs I've taken myself and uploaded under the CC-by-sa as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Your request is perfectly sane. I myself multi-license under various terms for various namespaces. -- Ram-Man 18:21, Nov 24, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] A Message to my Fellow Candidate

Friend,
The Arbitration Committee elections are almost here. I humbly ask for your vote in this election cycle. I have been a user of Wikipedia for over a year. I was here before the Community Portal, categories, or stub. I know how Wikipedia operates, and I am prepared to do my part to deal with problematic accounts. I wish to cut out the bureaucracy that makes our website stagnate. We need solutions to our problems now. If you want an arbitrator who believes in action, frankness, honesty, and fairness in every case, I am your arbitrator. Thank you for your time. You are under no obligation to answer this message.
