From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry Elliott Chevallier Kitchener, 2nd Earl Kitchener (5 October 1846-27 March 1937), was a British soldier. He was the eldest son of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Horatio Kitchener, and the elder brother of the famous military commander Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener. Kitchener served in France in 1870 and in Burma and during the Manipur Expedition in 1892. He later achieved the rank of Colonel and also fought in the First World War. On 5 June 1916 he succeeded his younger brother as second Earl Kitchener according to a special remainder in the letters patent.
Lord Kitchener was married in 1877 to Eleanor Fanny Lushington with whom he had a son and a daughter. His son and heir Henry Franklin Kitchener, Viscount Broome (1878-1928) predeceased him so his titles passed to his grandson Henry Herbert Kitchener on his death in 1937.
His great granddaughter Emma Joy Kitchener (born 1962) is a lady in waiting to Princess Michael of Kent and the wife of actor Julian Fellowes.
