Henry H. Starkweather

Henry Howard Starkweather was born in Preston Connecticut April 29, 1826, died in office while serving as a member of the United States Congress on Jan 28, 1876. His parents were John Starkweather and and Lydia (Button) Starkweather of Preston, Connecticut. His father was a veteran of the War of 1812 - a private in Captian Isaac Nelsons Company, and Henry was a first cousin to Brig. General John Converse Starkweather.

Henry served in the Connecticut Legislature in 1856 and was a delegate from the State of Connecticut to the National Republican Convention which nominated Abraham Lincoln in 1860, and to that which named Grant in 1868. He was chairman of the Republican State Commitee of Connecticut and a member of the National Republican executive comittee. He was appointed postmaster of Norwich CT in 1861 by Abraham Lincoln, and was re appointed by President Andrew Johnson again in 1865. He resigned in 1866 and was elected to US Congress in 1867 and served until he died in office in 1876.
