Henry D. Wardle

Howard Douglas Wardle was born August 15, 1915 in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada.
He joined the R.A.F in December of 1938 and on the completion of his pilot training joined No.218 Squadron as a Pilot Officer at Auberives-sur-Suippes, France November 29, 1939.
Pilot Officer Wardle flew his first operational mission January 10, 1940 when 2 flights of Fairy Battle Mk.1 aircraft from 218 Squadron bombed a German infantry column near Dampierre France.
On April 20th 1940 Pilot Office Wardle's aircraft was shot down while conducting a reconnaissance flight over Crailsheim Germany. Of the three members of the crew only Wardle was able to successfully bail out. Killed were Sergeant Edward Davidson, Observer and Aircraftsman 1st Class Albert Baily, Airgunner.
Wardle was picked up almost immediately and transferred to the POW camp Oflag IXA Spangenberg. While at this camp Wardle successfully escaped through the camp gymnasium but was recaptured with 24 hours. Due to this experience he was transferred to Oflag IVC Colditz.
Successfully escaped from Colditz Castle in the company of Captain Pat Reid R.A.S.C, Major Ronald B. Littledale K.R.R.C and Lieutenant Commander L.W Stephens R.N.V.R.
