Henri Büsser

Henri Büsser (January 16, 1872December 31, 1973) was a French classical music composer and conductor.

Henri-Paul Büsser was born in Toulouse, Haute-Garonne, France. The musical secretary to Charles Gounod, he was an 1893 winner of the Prix de Rome for music. As a conductor, Büsser assisted composer Claude Debussy and, during the last two decades of Jules Massenet's life, was one of Massenet's closest protégés.

His noted students include the Japanese composer Tomojiro Ikenouchi (1906-1991).

He married the noted soprano Yvonne Gall (1885-1972).

In 1921 he became the professor of composition at the Conservatoire and in 1939 director of the Opéra Comique. He composed masses and other vocal music, and several operas, including Jane Grey, Daphnis et Chloé, Colomba, Les noces corinthiennes, Le carosse du Saint Sacrement.

Henri Büsser died in Paris in 1973 at the age of 101.
