Hennenman

Hennenman is a small town in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality of the Free State province of South Africa. The town is unusual in the district as its economy is based mainly on agriculture not gold. The town, which started out as a railway station, was previously called Ventersburg Road. The name was changed in 1927 to Hennenman Station after a prominent local farmer. On the 5 December 2000, Hennenman was incorporated into the Matjhabeng Local Municipality with the city of Welkom and the towns of Allanridge, Odendaalsrus, Ventersburg and Virginia.
Originally the black people lived in a separate area than the whites in the southern part of Hennenman which came into existence in 1944 but in 1952, the houses were torn down because they were too close to the white areas and the residents were forcefully removed to a new township 15km from Hennenman. It was ironicilly called Vergenoeg an Afrikaans word – meaning, far away enough. The name was later changed to Phomolong.
