Thanks for the welcome. I didn't know earlier how to respond to messages. -Hemanshu 01:15, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)

What was I observed vandalising/testing - if so it was entirely unintentional and unmalicious. I have respect for Wikipedia. It was probably a mistake - I am fairly new to Wikipedia. Ludraman, 20:10

Re Image:Mumbai.terra.300px.jpg: It'd be good if you could indicate where images come from when you upload them. Thanks, snoyes 22:34, 20 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I have done the needful. -Hemanshu

Welcome to the 'pedia! I saw that you created and then blanked the Hemanshu Desai page. As a tip, if you make a site by mistake and wish it to be deleted, you can list it here Wikipedia:Cleanup and explain why, or ask one of the Administrators to delete it. Personal subpages that you wish to be deleted may also be listed on Wikipedia:Personal subpages to be deleted. I am guessing that Hemanshu Desai was a page about you and that you want it deleted since you now have the info on your user space. May I delete the page? Dori 06:26, Nov 21, 2003 (UTC)

Looks like it just got deleted by someone else :) Dori 06:27, Nov 21, 2003 (UTC)

Dont be afraid to upload large images. small images are useless. 169.229.204.186

I wouldn't say they are useless. The Image use policy just suggests nothing less than 100 pixels. Angela 16:27, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I can't see why HMPS is significant enough to be included so it is likely to be deleted, as many school articles are. Can you think of a way of merging the two schools you have written about with a different article instead? Perhaps the Andheri page could be expanded? Angela 16:27, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Hello, The article you created at The Peshwas appears to be copied from [1]. I also reverted your additions to Maharashtra since they also appear to be copied without permission. Daniel Quinlan 00:31, Nov 25, 2003 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your new additions to Maharashtra. One request, could you please combine related changes into a single edit? Use the Show preview button if you need to see what a small change does before continuing with other edits. So many small edits make it harder for people to find where a specific change was made. Thanks. Daniel Quinlan 16:53, Dec 9, 2003 (UTC)

Place Stub notes below your short pages (those biographies of Indian congressmen, etc), unless you intend to expand them into real multi-paragraph articles within the next few hours. Thanks. --Menchi (Talk)â 12:47, 16 Dec 2003 (UTC)

List of people from Maharashtra - You have added many people who IMO, dont belong there. I can understand A.R.Rehman. But Ilayaraja??? MS Subbulakshmi - my God ??? While it may be true that these people may have performed in Maharashtra or Mumbai, I dont feel it is correct to label them as from Maharashtra. Anyway, IMO, the article isnt very useful. It links to a large repository of unwritten articles. Wikipedia does not recommend such articles. Waiting for your response chance 12:57, Dec 22, 2003 (UTC)

[edit] List-of-people-by-name Structure

I think i like the direction you are taking Mas-Maz, but there are two major problems:

  • The structure is broken while you are in the midst of editing it, so you need to
    • edit an unpopulated copy to build the new structure
    • move the names into in one sitting
    • replace the active root of the subtree you're working on with your new root
    • ASAP analyze the history of the old root of your subtree to see which names got added between the start of your populating of the new version and making it active
    • move the new names found in the old subtree into the new, now active, subtree
  • you can't, can't, can't walk away to do some other interesting thing and leave it broken as you have done today.

Please stay away from it until we have agreed how to proceed with it. I welcome your participation and ideas for it, but List of people by name is an active structure subject to many edits per day, and the first order of business is for me to revert what you've done. (Your effort will, however, be worth salvaging, and i will do that if you do not; don't imagine you've wasted your effort on it.)

And please be in touch to let me know you understand, or are beginning to. I think your ideas (which i may not yet be able to make out completely) are almost certainly good ones, and even tho i wish you'd had more insight into the consequences and done it differently, i'm glad you messed it up since the choice probably was between messing it up and doing nothing with it! This is a small setback, that will be worth it in the long run.

Oh, yeah: Welcome to Wikipedia! --Jerzy 16:46, 2004 Jan 21 (UTC)

[edit] List of people by name

Hi, I've been asked to help with the List of people by name article. What exactly are you trying to do with it? I'm not sure I understand the issue really, but perhaps you could discuss it with Jerzy so you don't both end up moving the page backwards and forwards. Let me know if there's anything I can help with. Angela. 01:52, Jan 22, 2004 (UTC)

Hemanshu, i want to apologize for the message i left for you, which you may understandably have found at best peremptory in tone. I probably neglected careful and polite phrasing in my anxiety to deal with the side effects of your edits aimed at replacing List of people by name: Mas-Maz. I also want to apologize in general for the effect on you of what was for me a harried day, and in particular for the confused picture i conveyed to Angela, which is reflected in her msg above. If you're curious abt the complication i faced (which has very little to do with you and is in no sense your fault), i may pull the msgs together into a coordinated account. Or if you can't wait, they're in the following sections:

What Angela is concerned about is IMO not going to be a problem, bcz

  • you and i have an important point of agreement she may not fully appreciate, namely that your concept for replacing List of people by name: Mas-Maz with List of people by name: Mas and three other pages should have its wrinkles worked out and be put "into production", and
  • our point of disagreement is (IMO) a very small and technical (rather than, say, esthetic or psychological one) and i think i will be able to point out fairly quickly the technical subtleties that you'll agree need to be factored in to get your approach up and working.

I hope neither Angela nor i (nor the subtleties i spoke of) will dampen your interest in the valuable project you initiated. I have, in order to get the list working smoothly again:

I will follow up as follows:

  • find any new names or removals of names that were done on the pages you started, and reflect them in List of people by name: Mas-Maz;
  • turn the redirect List of people by name: Mas into a copy of your last version of the same name;
  • enumerate, for the edification of both of us the full range of the subtleties i have spoken of.

(If you are concerned about the implications of that for the histories, that's a good concern, and let's discuss it.)

While i would be willing to do the work of dealing with those nitty-gritty subtleties in detail, i hope your interest will continue, and that you'll take the pedagogical opportunity to get a gut feeling for them, by seeing the transformations that we need emerge as you deal with the subtleties. My reason for that preference is that i think your insight into the problem will be enhanced by that experience, and that your creativity will be that much more valuable, whether on aspects only indirectly related to List of people by name, as an explicit collaborator with those already working on it, or for all i know as a new broom to come in and make a clean sweep of the List of people by name project, leading a thorough-going re-design of it.

I hope you'll be thinking about whether you want to carry forward the work of making your concept work smoothly enuf on the Mas thru Maz range to replace List of people by name: Mas-Maz. It will then act as a pilot project for an approach that you and i and others may end up applying to the whole of the "fourth level" (and higher ones) of the tree, and (haven't thought this through) perhaps to the third level as well. I'll wait a while, and ask again even if i become anxious to start to complete the pilot implementation without you. --Jerzy 07:35, 2004 Jan 22 (UTC)

I'm not sure the following list is perfect, but i think you'll find it pretty thorough. I didn't go into why these things are needed, but i assume most of them will be clear now that they are pointed out.

More importantly, i am guessing this was a bigger task than you anticipated, and the size and interlocking complexity is why i think a special strategy is needed: i.e., building most of it in pages that are not linked, directly or otherwise, from List of people by name, then swapping in those pages, or blocks of marked-up text, in a much shorter time than what it took to get them ready. If you're interested in continuing, let's discuss.

For now, all those you worked on except List of people by name: Mas can be worked on w/o worry, and i will set up a page to work on that one as well, under a different name. --Jerzy 07:30, 2004 Jan 23 (UTC)

[edit] My Opinion on What Next

First (and i think this illustrates the need for careful planning of a project like this), i've added one more page that i forgot about, in bold, to the list of pages not yet worked on.

Talk:List of people by name: Mas/Work is where i have created a copy of the last version of List of people by name: Mas you worked up. My intention is that you and/or i will

The reason for that exact sequence is that the history of additions and changes to the production version of the list (the history most of interest to most users) will appear in an orderly, continuous, and straightforward fashion on the production version. Only the short and more esoteric development done on Talk:List of people by name: Mas/Work will be disconnected from the mainstream of the list's history, attached to another page.

IMO, the work on the pages listed under == Necessary Pages you Never Worked on == would not justify working on a non-production copy, bcz for each of them the work amounts to pasting the same block of links over the Mas-Maz link. That operation may even be as quick as doing a page-move.

Perhaps i am restating the obvious, but you'll note that the work on Maa-Mab thru Mar, and Ma, is the last stage of putting your scheme into pilot production: doing it earlier would just be exposing other pages that are still under construction to general use. -- Jerzy 06:25, 2004 Jan 24 (UTC)

I've been using ideas i got from your work on List of people by name: Mas-Maz on several other pages (e.g., recently, List of people by name: Ba, List of people by name: Mo, and List of people by name: Br). Especially now that i am pretty well settled on some new techniques, i'm thinking of going ahead in the next few days with finishing what you began with Mas-Maz. If i don't hear from you, i'll go ahead without further consultation. --Jerzy 21:34, 2004 Feb 10 (UTC)

[edit] Talk Archives

Hemanshu, just noticed you've been doing a lot of moving things around in archives at Internet child pornography, often one line at a time. Why only one line at a time? Strikes me as odd, is all. Is this some project you've undertaken? Just curious. Thanks. :) Jwrosenzweig 06:07, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Thanks! Sorry to bother you. I happened to look at a diff that consisted only of a vote I posted months ago...and then I couldn't remember voting, and then I did, and then I realized you seemed to be posting a lot of them like that and wondered why. It makes perfect sense now. Happy archiving. :) Jwrosenzweig 06:19, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Welcoming committe

Hi Hemanshu. I started to answer you here, but it got rather long so instead of cluttering your talk page I'll just reply on Wikipedia talk:Welcoming committee. Isomorphic 20:04, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)
