Hemswell Cliff

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hemswell Cliff is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 683. It is on the A631 between Caenby Corner and Gainsborough and on the escarpment of Lincoln Cliff.

RAF Hemswell was located on the site from 1937 until it closed in 1967. The site and buildings were subsequently redeveloped into a residential area and private trading estate which became a new civil parish of Hemswell Cliff. The old village of Hemswell remains as a separate parish.

There is still a small RAF presence on the site but most is now civilian. The RAF still own the Community centre and have spent considerable money refurbishing it.

The old H Block buildings on the site have now become home to one of the Europe's largest antique centres and there are also various shops, a garden centre, hairdresser, used book shop and several cafe's. On Sundays there is a very large Sunday market and car boot sale.

The Hemswell Cliff Bomber County Aviation Museum is located here.

Hemswell Cliff Primary School is in the village.
