In 2005-2006, thirteen students were honored as National Merit Finalists.[2] Hempfield offers a wide range of honors and advanced placement classes, which prepare its students for college. To date, nineteen Advanced Placement courses were offered to students, as well as collegiate focused curriculum. In addition, Hempfield was successful at the prestigious "Pennsylvania Math League" competition in 2006.[3] Nearly 80% of Hempfield graduates continue on to excel in post secondary education. Hempfield annually sends its graduates to some of the best colleges and universities throughout the country, including the University of Pennsylvania, Caltech, MIT, Georgetown, Williams, and Harvard.

It is show which is completely original that gives the money made from three shows to various worthy foundations. Hempfield's Performing Arts Center is among the best constructed, and most expensive, high school stages in Pennsylvania. The "PAC" is often rented out by local dance companies and performance groups to hold their productions.

Most notably, the men's volleyball team, coached by Mr. Mike Vogel, has recently won eight state championships for the school district. Likewise, the girls Volleyball team, also coached by Vogel, has won countless league, district, and state titles. Former major league baseball player Tom Herr and his son Aaron Herr, who is currently in the minors, are also alumni. The Athletics at Hempfield have a proud history and continue to have a strong program.

[edit] Music

The Hempfield Black Knight Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. William Powers, is one of the most successful bands in the region. With over 115 members, it is known for its screaming brass line, a solid percussion section and its reputation of entertainment. Other than the marching band, Hempfield is also host to other bands. The Concert Band is a stunning 120+ performance group which accepts all levels of musicians from all grades. The Jazz Bands include the Jazz band who hosts a variety of shows during the year and the Jazz Lab Band which performs with the Jazz Band during the spring jazz concert. All of the bands at Hempfield are supervised by the department chair of music, Mr. William Powers.

Hempfield is also home to many other performing groups such as Hempfield Singers, a high level choir; Chamber Singers, a very select group which also performs at home basketball games; Bel Canto Singers, an all female choir and Concert Chorale, a chorus open to all abilities. The Hempfield Choirs are all led by Dr. Alan Mudrick.

The Hempfield Orchestras are under the direction of Mr. Donald Grabowski. The performing groups include: Symphony Strings, an orchestra tailored to advanced musicians; Concert Strings, a performing orchestra designed for underclassmen; and Concertus Musicus; a select chamber orchestra.

All orchestras, bands and choirs perform at either the holiday concert, the winter concert and a spring concert as well. Some groups have shows outside of the Hempfield music department, which change every year.[4]
