Hemicyon is an extinct genus of bear-like animals.
It was about 1.50 m (5 ft) long and looked more like a robust dog than a bear, complete with a longer tail. Most likely Hemicyon was more carnivorous than most true bears, actively hunting prey. Unlike modern bears (but like dogs), Hemicyon walked on its toes. Because of this it is presumed to have hunted on plains, possibly in packs. Hemicyon, along with several related genera, belongs to the Hemicyonidae family of bear-like animals. Hemicyonids are closely related to, and probably the ancesters of, the family of bears.
