Helsinki commuter rail
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Helsinki commuter rail is the commuter rail system in Greater Helsinki, Finland. The network is operated by VR, the Finnish national railway company. The first line was opened in 1969. The network forms the heart of the public transportation infrastructure in the city together with the Helsinki Metro and trams.
Trains run above grade in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Within the municipalities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen, the system uses interchangeable tickets with the bus, metro and tram networks managed by Helsinki City Transport and the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council. Kerava and Kirkkonummi are set to join the ticketing system from the beginning of 2007.
The network is composed of 13 separate lines, although many of these lines are simply variations of each other with various limited-stop options. There are 14 railway stations within the City of Helsinki, and a total of 54 stations altogether within the Helsinki metropolitan area.
A new railway line to Lahti opened on 3 September 2006.
Of the lines below, L and T are night and early morning lines. Also line N runs only in the night and early morning during the weekdays and Saturday - but all day on Sunday.
