Helmut

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut, (Hellmut, Helmuth, Hellmuth, etc.) is a common given name in the German language. As a family name it is rather uncommon.

Its second part "Mut" is clearly German for "courage", "vigour", but about the origin of the first part there are different theories, relating it to historical languages' words for "bright", "hell", "helmet", and "sword".

The best known bearer of the name is probably the conservative former German chancellor Helmut Kohl. The movie Night on Earth features a character named Helmut, who is mocked about his name by an English speaker.
