Helmer, Michigan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Helmer, Michigan refers specifically to the Helmer House Inn on the north shore of Big Manistique Lake in Luce County. Originally a parsonage and mission house, the building was purchased by Gaylord and Tillie Helmer, who expanded the structure and made a general store and inn. It later became a general post office, establishing it as an official place on the map. The building was later sold to the Fyvie family. After several years of operation it was later closed and fell into disrepair. A Fyvie descendant later restored the inn and it is now in operation and noted as a State Historic Site.
Helmer also refers to the residences and businesses in the general vicinity of the Helmer House Inn.
