(2006)

Hell Hath No Fury is the oft-delayed second album from the Virginia hip hop duo the Clipse. It was released in late 2006. Like their debut album, Hell Hath No Fury features production handled solely by Pharrell Williams, of The Neptunes. The album features relatively few guest appearances, and those few are limited to members of the Star Trak roster, or the Clipse's own group, the Re-Up Gang.

Two singles have been released from the album: "Mr. Me Too" with Pharrell Williams and "Wamp Wamp (What It Do)" with Slim Thug.

[edit] Overview

Unlike their debut, the material on Hell Hath No Fury is of a much darker tone, due to the their problematic relationship with Jive Records. From an interview with AllHipHop.com, in July of 2006:

We were ready to get into the thick of things with the success of the first album … the songs we had done were really hot, but at that point in time we were in a different place, we were happier. Time passed, and we saw it was a big hold up, and the momentum, the people that waited for us, we took too long. We couldn't dare come out in the same mind frame as we did in Lord Willin' - so, now we mad, we angry, we pissed the fuck off. [1]

[edit] Delay

The Clipse originally began recording material for Hell Hath No Fury in late 2003. However, further work on the album was halted in 2004, when Arista Records—their label at the time—was dissolved into its sister label Jive Records, as part of a larger merger between Sony Music Entertainment and BMG. Because of contractual issues, they were forced to stay with Jive.

While the Clipse resumed work on the album, and eventually finished its recording, its release was continuously delayed by Jive throughout the rest of 2004 and much of 2005. The album was further delayed when the Clipse sued Jive, after the label refused to grant them a release from their contract. Their legal issues would not be resolved until May of 2006 [2] and despite this, the album still suffered delays; its original August 29 release date was changed to October 31, before a November 28 release date was finally settled upon.

[edit] Critical reception

The album received uncommonly strong reviews from both mainstream and rap publications, praising both the inventiveness of the Clipse's lyrics and the exotic elements of The Neptunes' production. It's also notable that the album received significant praise from more rock-oriented media not traditionally known for support of non-alternative or drug-referencing hip hop, such as Rolling Stone.

The album has also been ranked at number one on Prefix Magazine's list of the best albums of 2006 [1], number nine on Blender Magazine's list of the 50 best albums of 2006 [2] and number seven on Pitchfork Media's list ("Trill" was also ranked at number six on its list of the top 100 songs of 2006). It also received a rare 'XXL' rating from XXL Magazine, becoming only the sixth album in the magazine's history to receive such a rating.
