[edit] Geography

Helgenæs is a minor peninsula stretching out from Djursland in Denmark.

The areal of the peninsula is roughly twenty square kilometres.

The most narrow part of the peninsula is barely 200 metres, and it is told that the Vikings, when sailing between Århus and Ebeltoft, transported their boats over land there by rolling them on tree trunks, thus saving approximately four nautical miles of travel.

To the west of Helgenæs, 16 kilometres across Århus Bay, lies Århus, the second-largest city in Denmark. Ten kilometres to the east you find Ebeltoft, an important Danish coastal city. Five kilometres to the northwest is Skødshoved, another peninsula slightly larger than Helgenæs.

Some mentionable towns on Helgenæs are Kongsgårde, Borup and Fejrup.

[edit] Tourism

A relatively large number of tourists visits Helgenæs in the summer, mostly German tourists, but also tourists from other Scandinavian countries, as well as tourists from other parts of Denmark who wants to experience the mild weather on Helgenæs.

Compared to the size of the peninsula, a quite large amount of it is covered in summer housing.

The main tourist attraction on Helgenæs are the peninsula itself with its beautiful nature, but a few other things are also open for visit. Sletterhage Fyr, a beautiful old lighthouse in southwestern Helgenæs, and Tyskertårnet, a leftover bunker-type building from World War II, are often visited by tourists.

On Helgenæs is also a gallery with Bo Bendixen's paintings, a successful famous Danish painter.

[edit] Transport

Busline 361 goes between Helgenæs and Rønde many times a day, connecting Helgenæs with an other buslines going to Århus, Grenå, Ebeltoft and more.

A small passengerferry sails between Århus and Kongsgårde several times in the weekend.

[edit] Shopping

The only shopping facilities on Helgenæs is "Dagli'Brugsen" in Kongsgårde, a small supermarket selling everything you might need.

Tiny shops in the side of the road sells honey, fruits, potatoes, eggs or even homemade souvenirs; these are scattered all over the peninsula, although mostly in mainstreets going through towns.

[edit] Other points of interest

Stødov Kirke is the only church on Helgenæs, and in a small building close to the church lies a museum.

In the middle of Helgenæs is also a community house, where summer- and Christmas parties are being held. These buildings are leftovers from a now scrapped project of building a local school on Helgenæs.
