Helene Stöcker
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Helene Stöcker (born 13 November 1869 in Wuppertal; died 24 February 1943 in New York) was a German feminist, pacifist and publicist. In 1903, she founded the "Bund für Mutterschutz und Sexualreform" for protection of unmarried mothers and their children. Her liberal stances on sexuality (particularly homosexuality) was considered too radical for many people in her time.
During World War I and the Weimar period, Stöcker's interest shifted to activities in the peace movement. In 1921 in Bilthoven, together with Kees Boeke und Wilfred Wellock, she founded the "Internationale der Kriegsdienstgegner", an international union of pacifists.
When the Nazis came to power in Germany, Stöcker flew via Switzerland and Sweden to the United States, where she died of cancer in 1943.
