Helen Svensson Fletre

Helen Svensson Fletre (1909–1987) was a prominent Norwegian-American Author/Journalist born in Sweden and who was married to Lars Fletre (1904—1977) of Voss, Norway. She met her Husband while visiting Chicago, Illinois. She and her family returned to the United States in 1954 (where she resided in Chicago, Illinois until her passing in March of 1987). Both Helen and Lars Fletre were prominent members of the Chicago Norwegian colony from 1954 when she and her husband settled there with their 3 children in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Helen Fletre handled translation and was a guide for the Chicago portion of King Olav of Norway's state visit to America during 1975 (in which he came to America to help celebrate 150 years of Norwegian emigration to America). She served as a journalist for the Chicago Norwegian-American newspaper "Vinland" until it ceased publication. Most Norwegian and Norwegian-American artists/writers/visitors to Chicago had at one time or another visited the Fletre household (located just outside of the Logan Square area at Belmont and Kimball). Helen has 2 surviving children, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
