Heinrich Conried (born Cohn, 1855-1909 in Merano, Italy), he also used the name Robert Buchholz, was a theatrical manager, born in Bielitz (Austria). He received his education at the Realschule in Vienna. Early on, he was an actor in Europe, then he moved to New York City where he assumed the management of the Irving Place Theatre. In 1903, he succeeded Maurice Grau as director of the Metropolitan Opera House (until 1908). Soon afterward, he conceived the New Theatre. For his advancement of art he was decorated by the emperors of Germany and Austria and the kings of Italy and Belgium.
