Hediard

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The story of Hediard begins with a man named Ferdinand Hediard, who from the middle of the XIXth century has been the forerunner in the discovery of exotic products for the Parisian market, after coming across them in the port of Le Havre where he went as a companion of the Tour de France.
The "Comptoir des Epices et des Colonies" is opened in 1880 at 21, Place de la Madeleine, where loose fruit and vegetables are sold by pretty girls from Martinique.
Aromas of tea, coffee, vanilla and spices give Hediard an aura of refinement. As years pass, Hediard’s image and reputation grow stronger.
Today, Hediard’s shops are characterized by a large range of delicatessen products (about 6 000 items), from both local and distant lands, which privilege quality over fashion, and by the exceptional presentation of their products. Perfumes, colours and images reflect the seasons and evoke rarity, exoticism and authenticity.
For many years Hediard has been a member of the Colbert committee, which unites the big names in French Luxury goods.
Today, Hediard has shops all over France as well as abroad ; it also offers catering services and a restaurant on the floor above the shop in Place de la Madeleine. The recent addition of a Receptions Department is unique in the field of event personalization.
With a name evoking magic since 1854, symbol of exoticism and discovery, Hédiard maintains the noble, authentic values of its trade and stirs emotions by making each of its products a gift in itself.
Hédiard is above all a name that conjures dreams, that evokes the up-market, and is a referent as much as a guarantee.
At the same time, the pleasant, human side of the original colonial atmosphere still prevails, perceptible in the lingering aromas of spices and coffee. Authenticity is at the heart of Hédiard’s values and conveys on a day-to-day basis the spirit of a tradition of gustatory discovery.

[The production laboratory]:

In 1900 Max Kusel installs his first laboratory in Place de la Madeleine in order to make the famous crystallized fruit imported from Brazil.
In 1920, he buys a warehouse behind Montparnasse station, where new jams and confectionary are produced.
In the 1950s, the factory is installed in the XVII arrondissement.

In 1969, with ever-bigger quantities to produce, the factory is moved to the provinces, to a small village in the Gard, in Générac, « nearer to the fruits ».
Today, in Générac, it isn't enough to conserve the recipes and quality of former times, instead new products are constantly being conceived, taking into account the seasons, changing tastes and fashions, and the will and creativity so synonymous with the Hédiard name.
Today, Générac produces all Hédiard's fruit-based delicatessen products (jams, jellies, compotes, syrups, crystallized fruit, purées) but also confectionaries such as fudge, Turkish delight or marzipan, and even certain condiments.

This factory is a veritable laboratory conforming to all hygiene standards. A new packaging line allows automatic filling and closure of jam jars, as well as highly efficient labelling thanks to a new system allowing maximum adaptability.
