Heckscher State Parkway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Heckscher State Parkway is a 7.8-mile parkway spur that is an extension of the Southern State Parkway and leads to Heckscher State Park. It is routed and signed as a logical extension of the Southern State Parkway, so it shares the same unsigned New York State Reference Route: 908M. There is very little to indicate the actual existence of the parkway's name--except along Route 27 and Route 27A.

It originally was a two lane road in 1930 labeled the Heckscher Spur stretching from NY 27A in Islip to the Heckscher State Park on the south shore. The official Parkway was started in 1959, along with the reconstruction of the interchange between the Sagtikos State Parkway and the Southern State Parkway. From there the parkway shows more modern parkway design, with extended medians, and features a unique dual service road that goes both ways (Spur Drive North and South).
