HEC Montréal (École des Hautes Études Commerciales), the first Management School in Canada, is the affiliated business school of the Université de Montréal and is one of only two schools in North America to hold triple accreditation in management education: AACSB International (United States), EQUIS (Europe) and AMBA (United Kingdom). The formal, full name of the school is École des Hautes Études Commerciales, but since 2002 the school has officially be known as HEC Montréal. The name was standardized to differentiate it from other HEC institutions such as HEC Paris and HEC Lausanne. Locally, the school is simply known as HEC (roughly pronounced "Ash-eh-say", and not "heck").

HEC Montréal was founded in 1907 by the Chambre de commerce de Montréal [1] and the school has been serving the Global Corporate World for the last hundred years. This year, 2007, the school is celebrating its 100th anniversary 100th Anniversary Site. HEC Montréal is a leader in research and teaching, home to fifty research centres, including 22 chairs. A decade ago, HEC was primarily known as a teaching institution, but in recent years, the administration has made a major push to focus on the research output of its faculty while maintaining the highest teaching standards. Over 12,000 students are enrolled in its 33 management programs, taught by over 240 professors.

The School has a strong international outlook, and it hosts Canada's largest and most prestigious international exchange program, involving partnerships with 79 universities and major management schools in 28 countries. It maintains an active presence in over 40 countries. HEC Montréal is also a forerunner in bringing new technologies to its campus. The school is known for its extensive electronic capital, including one of the best-equipped trading rooms which is updated with real-time financial data by Bloomberg, E-Signal and Reuters. HEC Montréal was also one of the first schools to make use of laptop computers mandatory for its Bachelor of Business Administration students.

The major language of instruction at HEC Montréal is French, but many courses are offered in English and Spanish). Holding to its true international character, HEC Montréal offers trilingual MBA and BBA (French, English, Spanish) programs, the only management school in North America to do so. These unique programs provide excellent international career opportunities to its students. The innovative and intensive HEC MBA program is offered both in English and in French with an option to take several courses in Spanish.

HEC Montréal's MBA program was also listed among the Top 20 non-US MBA programs in Forbes' 2005 B-Schools rankings (biennial rankings) [3]. The school has also been ranked among the Top B-Schools by Wall Street Journal and the Economist Intelligence Unit (the business information arm of The Economist Group). HEC is a part of an elite group of 9 Canadian B-Schools reviewed by the http://www.canadianmba.com/ [4]. However, the school is notably absent from the Financial Times top 100 list.

[edit] Buildings

In 1996, HEC Montréal moved to an ultra-modern, futuristic $100-million building. [5] It is situated at 3000 Côte-Sainte-Catherine, next to the Université-de-Montréal Metro Station. The architect was the Romanian-born Dan S. Hanganu, who said about the design, "HEC Montréal is a temple of knowledge". "This building energizes people," said Jean-Marie Toulouse, former director of HEC, who called HEC's former building "a bunker". The "bunker" is now used as a secondary building (called the Decelles Building), situated at 5255 Decelles. The HEC buildings are 28 and 22 on the UdeM campus map.
