I Can't Explain (2) |
"Heaven And Hell" is one of the songs written by John Entwistle for the Who. It was consistently played live from 1968-1970 and was the opening number during the band's Tommy tours; it was also briefly resurrected during the first few shows of the band's 1975 UK tour. This was one of the most complex tracks the Who performed, with Entwistle's bass and Keith Moon's drumming at outstanding speeds. "Heaven and Hell" contains a long solo by guitarist Pete Townshend. The solo was ranked #15 on dream door's list of the 100 Greatest Rock Guitar Solos Live.
Live versions can be found on both Live at Leeds and Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970.
A studio version (which the band disliked) was released as the b-side of "Summertime Blues" in 1970. The version was also on the compilation Thirty Years of Maximum R&B. The band disliked the song in studio, as they could never capture their onstage energy and overall performance.
