Heat Guy J (ヒートガイジェイ?) is a 26 episode science fiction anime series created by Escaflowne director Kazuki Akane and Satelight. It was licensed and was distributed in the U.S. in 2003 by Pioneer, now known as Geneon. It also spun off into its own short manga which was licensed and distributed by TOKYOPOP. The show also was broadcast on the cable channel MTV2.

The show was picked up for a UK DVD release by Manga Entertainment starting in March 2006. It will be released in double disc sets to make up for the delay in release dates.

This series chronicles the cases and adventures of a young Special Services officer named Daisuke Aurora and his powerful android partner simply named "J." The series takes place in the fictional, futuristic Metropolis of "Judoh" (Jewde). The main characters work for the mainly understaffed (and sometimes underfunded and underpowered) Special Services Division of the Bureau of Urban Safety. However, Judoh is also home to the Mafia group known as "Vampire" (also known as Company Vita). The last don who ran the organization has died, and the position of Don is inherited by his son Clair Leonelli. Heat Guy J mostly involves Daisuke and the powerful J keeping Vampire and Clair's criminal activities under control. (Although androids are considered illegal in Judoh, a special exception is made for J, much to the dismay of wary city officials.)

[edit] Characters

  • Daisuke Aurora - Department of Secured City, Central Headquarters Special Services Employee, 21

Cool, calm and collected, (and seemingly lazy) Daisuke is the part of the main force behind the Special Services Bureau. Quite often he prefers spending his time defending the streets and avoiding any paper work involved (hence a running joke of him "not turning in his reports.") Although he never really shows it, Daisuke is quite compassionate and has a strong sense of justice. However, he has deep and painful memories of the vanishing of his mother and his father (a politician) being murdered by an android. The only memoir of his father is a bullet pendant he wears around his neck.

  • J (also known as "Heat Guy J") - Special Services Android, 3, Appearance of a 40 year old Man

J.

An android with incredible power, the titular character was created in cooperation between a government facility and a civilian enterprise. Despite his hulking size, J can run at enormous speeds and packs a powerful punch. However, this causes a great deal of steam to be released from his mechanical body (hence the name "Heat Guy J.") Partnered with the young Daisuke, J is very noble of character and has his own values and beliefs on how "a man should act." J is also maintained by the Civilian Enterprises Sect technician, Antonia Bellucci. It is said that J is modeled after Antonia's father.

  • Kyoko Milchan - Department of Secured City, Central Headquarters Special Services Auditor/Accountant, 21

A young auditor and accountant for Special Services, Kyoko is a strait-laced person who always plays by the rules. However, her job creates all kinds of stress when dealing with Daisuke and J, and she often scolds Daisuke for not turning in his reports. She also harbors a crush for Daisuke's brother, Shun, who is also the General Manager of Special Services. But later on in the series, she is developing feelings towards Daisuke.

  • Shun Aurora - Government Investigative Office of Department of Secured City, Central Headquarters General Manager, 27

Daisuke's older brother and the General Manager of Special Services, Shun prides himself on his rational and logical thinking. Although he spent most of his life raising Daisuke after the death of their parents, Shun's logical nature is usually in conflict with Daisuke's more impulsive personality. He is responsible for the partnership between his brother and J. With the way Shun treats Daisuke, one would question on whether the two really are brothers.

  • Clair Leonelli - Current Don, or "Vampire" of the Mafia Organization, 19
Clair Leonelli
Clair Leonelli

The son of the Don, also called "Vampire" of Company Vita, Clair had to deal with the death of his father at a young age. It also put him next in line as the organization's Don. As a character, Clair is very complex, unpredictable and emotionally unstable. (He's known for his insane uses of grenades, including the fact that he brought one to his father's funeral.) Even with all the power he has, he still seems to suffer from an inferiority complex in the shadow of his deceased father. (He is not a true Vampire- the title refers to an underground leader and blood ceremony initiator.)

  • Monica Gabriel - Photographer, 10

Trying to take care of her unemployed mother, Monica works as a photographer who operates by wagon in the city of Judoh. She wants to preserve the long dead age of photography (which explains why she has so much trouble making a sale.) However, she has accumulated a great deal of information on Judoh and its business trends. She is a friend of Daisuke and gives him important advice and information whenever he needs it. She is like a little sister to Daisuke.

  • Antonia Belucci - Sect Employee, 24

An employee of the civilian enterprise "Sect," (the company responsible for creating J) she is responsible for J's maintenance. She still mourns the death of her father at an early age and was responsible for creating J in his image and personality. She worries and cares a lot for J. Daisuke also harbors a secret crush on Antonia.

  • Ken Edmundo - Galea Police Investigation Inspector, 33

A Crime scene investigator who is constantly annoyed with the Special Service Agency, he usually scolds and antagonizes Daisuke when he arrives on the scene.

  • Boma - Mysterious Beast-human warrior

A mysterious and silent refugee who is searching for his missing sister "Bunny." For punishment of a crime committed in his past, he was transformed into a "beast-human" hybrid and does some occasional jobs for Claire Leonelli. While he looks human, it is only a holographic disguise. His true form represents a werewolf. He is also a very powerful swordsman and proved to be a deadly enemy (and, later on, ally) of Daisuke and J.

  • Phia Oliveira - Central Headquarters, General Manager's Secretary, 24

Phia is Shun's head secretary over at the Special Services office. She is very reliable, although she seems to take enjoyment in seeing Shun and Daisuke argue.

  • Cynthia, Janis and Vivian 20, 21 and 19

Three girls who hang out and work on Kabuki Road. The three girls usually catch on to the latest news and gossip going around Judoh. The girls serve as another source of advice and information for Daisuke. Most of the time they try to hit on him, but they never really succeed.

  • Shogun - Dry Goods store owner, 72

The former boss of a Mafia faction, Shogun has grown old and serves as a Dry Goods store owner. However, he still keeps tabs on the Underground and serves as another important source of advice and information for Daisuke.

  • Mauro - Advisor to the Leonelli family

An important advisor who has worked for the Leonelli family for generations. His loyalty towards the family is unwavering; however, he seems to constantly worry about Claire.

[edit] The Manga

Coinciding with the anime series in 2002, a manga version of Heat Guy J was released. It was eventually distributed in the U.S. by TOKYOPOP in 2005. The manga was written and drawn by Chiaki Ogishima, based on the story by Kazuki Akane/Satelight and the character designs of Nobuteru Yuki. While the general setup, characters and concept of the story were similar to the anime, the manga introduces various characters and stories that never appeared in the anime series. A lot of events are similar to the TV show, while many others are different. The manga seems to strongly hint at its own spin on the Heat Guy J story (complete with added fanservice), but only one volume was released with no continuations in sight. The manga seems to merely serve itself as a promotion for the anime show, hence the massive info on the anime and foreword from the show's creators in the back of the book, and ends on a cliffhanger. But overall, it can be viewed as sort of an extra for Heat Guy J fans, adding a few new things to the original story.
