[edit] Plot Summary

The girls throw a party in their house, with Sophia doing the majority of the cooking. The Italian food is delicious, but while the other girls start clearing up, Sophia sits on the sofa, claiming she has a "bubble." Soon, this "bubble" turns into sharp pain. Sophia fears she is having a heart attack. Dorothy tries to laugh it off, but her mother is adamant. Blanche goes to call the paramedics, and Rose relates the story of how her husband Charlie died of a heart attack. The paramedics are delayed by a storm, so the girls must try to calm themselves. Rose and Blanche talk about death, and Dorothy asks them to shut up. Sophia nods off, but upon awakening, she claims she went to Heaven-and she wants to go back. Dorothy begs her to stay, and Sophia asks her to go into her room to get her rosary. In the bedroom, Dorothy confesses to Blanche that she is terrified about the prospect of losing Sophia. Blanche tells her that Dorothy isn't alone-she and Rose may not be blood-related, but they are family. Eventually, a doctor manages to get through the storm. He asks several questions, and reveals the true cause of the pain. It seems that Sophia had helped herself to a huge amount of food that day, ranging from sausage and peppers to a box of Milk Duds! This caused her to have a gallbladder attack, not a heart attack. After the doctor leaves, Dorothy, Rose and Blanche comment on the brevity of life, and how it seems pointless to not indulge when they will eventually die. They use this to attempt to justify eating a large chocolate cake with ice cream-but their better judgment kicks in before they can take a single bite.

[edit] Goofs

  • At the end of the episode, the girls plan to go for a walk. This is not only inconsistent with it being nighttime (visible from the window), but a key point in the entire episode-there was a huge storm delaying the paramedics! What happened to that storm?
  • In addition to the above mistake, the doctor enters into the house completely dry, although there's supposed to be a storm outside.

[edit] Memorable Quotes

  • Rose: There shouldn't be heart attacks, or cancer, or anything like that. There should just be a certain age where you have to turn your life in, like a library book. You pack your bag, you go, and that's that.
Blanche: I wouldn't know what to pack.
  • Sophia: How come so many doctors are Jewish?
Doctor Harris: Because their mothers are.
  • Rose: Don't worry, Dorothy. This isn't a heart attack. A heart attack's bigger. I've seen a heart attack. Charlie had a heart attack.
Dorothy: I know, Rose. What did you you do?
Rose: Well, first I had to dress him.
Dorothy: Dress him? He was undressed?
Rose: He died while we were...making love.
Dorothy: Oh, Rose. I'm sorry!...then what?
Rose: Well, we had a fight. I tried to put a pair of white pants on him, and Charlie said he couldn't wear white because it was after Labor Day!
Dorothy: He said that in the middle of a heart attack?
Rose: Oh, yes-Charlie was always very stubborn. And very dapper.
    Dorothy: And?...
Rose: ...And he...told me he loved me...and then it was over. And I put a pair of gray slacks on him. And a blue shirt...and a striped tie. And he was all dressed when the paramedics got there.
