“Headfirst For Halos” is the third single and sixth track from My Chemical Romance's debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.
[edit] Meaning
This song is about depression and contemplating suicide. The lyrics, “Now the red ones make me fly, and the blue ones help me fall” may refer to antidepressants. Another possibility, perhaps too specific for some fans, could be that the red pills are either Adderall or its generic form, named Amphetamine Salts, which are both red (though the generic are better described as orange.) These pharmaceuticals are being prescribed considerably often as treatment for ADHD in adolescents and in some cases even pre-adolescent children but are a Schedule 2 Narcotic in the US, and very similar to methamphetamines, and therefore have a very high abuse potential. Another possible blue pill is the popular non-narcotic sleeping pill Ambien, which is widely prescribed and advertised in many forms of media. According to lead vocalist Gerard Way, “This song is about suicide - don't do it.” He also referred to the song before as being about 'dancing your life away' It is a song that originally started off as a joke within the band, but the lead singer Gerard felt, that if they could pull it off it would allow them to take their music anywhere they choose to. "...it gave us such freedom" Gerard said.
