Head Negro In Charge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Head Negro In Charge is a phrase referencing the idea that African Americans can or should only be led by other African Americans. The person designated as the HNIC would thus become a proxy for the will of the group and given an elevated status by both whites and blacks. This syndrome has affected racial perceptions in the United States for many years.
A corollary of this idea suggests that only one African American individual can be allowed to rise to prominence in any area of expertise.
