Hd1080ip

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HD1080ip is a term first coined by Stewart Miller to describe video in 1920 x 1080 pixels that can be played over internet protocol (Miller, 2007). The purpose of publishing video in this resolution is so that it may be played natively on newer high definition monitors (March, 2007) that is manufactured at 1920 x 1080 resolution. By using HD1080ip protocol, web content formatted at 1920x1080 pixels (and embedded or streamed video relating to that web content or existing soley as the web content) may be played full screen on high def HDTV monitors without a cropping effect.

Sony uses a term for its HDTV monitors called "Full HD 1080" which is also specified at 1920 x 1080 resolution (Sony, 2006). The idea behind the term "Full" lies in the fact that some people also call resolutions less than 1920 x 1080 as HD. In fact, Sony has also been accused of using the term "Full HD 1080" for products that are only 1440 x 1080i such as their HD camcorder line (Ludington, 2007). Samsung has referred to the same resolution of 1920 x 1080 as "ultra HD" (Carnoy, 2005) but HD has also been found in lesser resolutions including 720p.
