Hawthorne, CA, subtitled Birthplace of a Musical Legacy, is the second anthology collection by The Beach Boys and released through Capitol Records. A double-CD, it was put together after the positive reaction to the Endless Harmony Soundtrack to give hardcore Beach Boys fans more rarities and alternate versions of well-known songs.
What is different about this set from its predecessor is that spoken word tracks from different band members in the mid to late 1990's (during the film production of the Endless Harmony documentary), as well as a 1969 radio show are salted throughout, letting Hawthorne, CA play more as an aural biography of the band, much like The Beatles' Anthology 1 did.
Spanning from home recordings in the Wilsons' family home in 1960 to the cutting of "Sail On, Sailor"'s backing track in late 1972, Hawthorne, CA is a fascinating alternate view into The Beach Boys' long career.
