Hawar Mulla Mohammed (Kurdish: ﺩﻪﻣﻪﺤﻣ ﻻﻪﻣ ﺭﺍﻭﺎﮪ, Arabic: هوار ملا محمد‎) (12 September 1981 Mosul, Iraq) is an Iraqi-Kurdish football player, who plays the midfield position. Hawar is known to be one of the best players in Iraqi national team.

[edit] Career

Hawar started his career by playing for Mosul Football Club in 1998 at the age of 17, but then moved on to Baghdad to joined Al Quwa Al Jawiya after immpresing coach Ammo Baba. Hawar made his debut for Al Jawiya in 2000, impressing fans with his quick speed and athletism. After his great performance in Al-Jawiya, Hawar was called up into the Iraqi Under 20 Team by Nazar Ashraf. The midfielder made his debut as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat by Egypt in February 2001. From there, the U20 team played in the World Youth Championship squad in Córdoba, Argentina.

In 2001, Coach Adnan Hamad brought Hawar into the national team at the age of 19 and made his debut in the 1-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia in Manama during Iraq’s 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign and has since then won himself a regular place on the left flank in both the Olympic and the national team.

Hawar was also part of Iraq's 2004 Summer Olympics.

In order to qualify to the Olympics, Iraq needed to beat its last opponent, Saudi Arabia, and hope a tie between Oman vs Kuwait. In the last qualifying match, Iraq was winning 2-1, but at the 89th minute, Hawar rips a shot and scores, giving Iraq the 3-1 lead, which was the final score. As soon as the match ended, the game of between Oman & Kuwait also ended with a 0-0 draw, which meant Iraq qualified to Athens 2004.

In the Olympics, Hawar lead the team to 4th place finish, scoring against Portugal in a 4-2 and also against Costa Rica in a 2-0 win.

Hawar has been criticized by some Kurdish nationalists for his way of handling the current Iraqi flag when he wrapped himself with the Iraqi national flag during a tournament. The current Iraqi flag was established by the Arab Ba'th party and nowhere to be seen in the Kurdish areas of Iraq. The majority of Kurds are proud of Hawar and his achievements.

Hawar currently plays for the Cypriot club Apollon Limassol. National Team Statistics
