IMDb profile

Havoc is an American motion picture produced in 2003 about the lives of wealthy teenagers living in Los Angeles, whose exposure to hip hop culture inspires them to imitate the "gangsta lifestyle" despite the fact that they aren't nearly as street smart or tough as they think their group is. They soon run into trouble when they come face-to-face with a real gang of Latino drug dealers. It was directed by Barbara Kopple and, although it played at several film festivals, the movie did not receive a theatrical release in the U.S., the distributors deciding instead to release the film straight to DVD on November 29, 2005.

The film stars Anne Hathaway, Bijou Phillips, Shiri Appleby, Freddy Rodriguez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Laura San Giacomo. The movie was filmed around Southern California, including Los Angeles, Altadena, Brentwood and Santa Monica.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

This film was the subject of much Internet-based rumor, due to reports that its star, Anne Hathaway, takes part in several nude scenes as well as scenes of a sexual nature. Prior to the film's release, Hathaway had been involved primarily in comedic-oriented films for Walt Disney Studios, including The Princess Diaries (2001) and Ella Enchanted (2004). The rumor mill progressed to the point where claims were made of near-pornographic activity being shown in the film, but Hathaway and others downplayed this. Another rumor related to this film is that Disney somehow convinced a rival studio not to release the film in competition with Hathaway's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004). Two versions of the film were released to DVD in North America. Both feature Hathaway appearing topless in some sexual and non-sexual scenes, and another which she playfully masturbates in front of a teenage filmmaker. Most of the simulated sexual activity is performed by co-star Bijou Phillips, including a sex scene where she is engaged in a threesome, in the middle of which she stops and starts screaming. Hathaway and Phillips playfully teased and flirted in non-nude scenes, increasing the amount of criticism surrounding Hathaway's role. There is little difference in content between the R-rated and the Unrated DVD releases.

Spoilers end here.
