It had a population of 1,439,116 of which 20.78% were urban as of 2001.

Haveri District is exactly in the centre of Karnataka with equal distance from Bidar in the far norh to Kollegal in far south. Haveri district consists of seven taluks namely Hanagal, Shiggaon, Savanur, Haveri, Byadagi, Hirekerur, Ranebennur. It is bounded by Dharwad district on the north, by Gadag district on north east, by Bellary district on East, by Davangere district on south, by Shimoga district on southwest and by Uttar Kannada on west and north west. Before it was made a separate district, it was part of Dharwad District. Haveri is 335 km from Bangalore.

Haveri is the administrative and political Head Quarters of the District, whereas Ranebennurin the south is a business hub. The important towns/villages in Haveri District are:

  • Haveri: Administrative, culture and political Head quarters. Famous for its cattle markets, oil mills and cotton markets.
  • Hangal: Taluk head quarter. Place of the beautiful Tarkeshawar temple.
  • Akki-Alur: City in Hanagal Taluk. Rice bowl of Haveri District. Famous for its lake and gardens.
  • Kumar Pattanam: Place of Birla industries on the bank of the river Tungabhadra.
  • Byadgi: Famous for Chillies.
  • Bankapura: Notified as Bankapur Conservation Reserve offering a safe haven for peacocks.
  • Ranebennur: Important trade centre in central Karnataka.
  • Kaginele: Kaginele Kanaka Guru Peetha, a religious Math (institution) dedicated to sage Kanakadasa is present here.

  • Kanakadasa: Kanakadasa was born is Bada village which situated in the district.
  • Mailara Mahadevappa: The freedom fighter who resisted British rule, is from Motebennur in Haveri District.
  • Gudleppa Hallikere: is another freedom fighter who is a native of Hosaritti in this district. He started a residential school Gandhi Grameen Gurukul in Hosaritti.

The Konanahalli family has been a model in terms of education, as many from that family have become architects, lawyers, medical doctors and engineers in India and abroad. The most prominent family of the district being the Magavi family, who have had an illustrious past as landlords and entrepreneurs besides being actively involved in politics, social work & religious activities(Sri Danamma Devi Devasthana Trust)in Haveri, since the 1920s to the present. The family also runs an NGO for the physically impaired - Shraddha Sansthan, which actively attempts to aid people with physical disabilities. The Magavi family has also been closely associated with one of Karnataka's most prominent Lingayat Maths - Bruhanmath, Chitradurga, for the last 100 years.
