[edit] The Village News

The Village News is a newspaper published since December 2001 by children in the village. It has been running for over 5 years, and has raised over £10,000 for a local charity, Willow Wood Hospice, in Ashton-under-Lyne.

The Village News is printed on A4 (b/w) and with 8-12 pages, this is Haughton Green's only newspaper and was founded by editor George Newton at age nine with no other reporters; now there are many, and George continues to edit the newspaper aged 14. The Village News organizes regular events in the community such as the Grand Easter Egg Raffles, Charity Walks over Werneth Low, Christmas and Summer Fete's.

The Village News also have a 'Villager of the Year' Award, which the Villager of the Year 2005 was Steven Johnson. They also held a Charity Auction Evening with Ricky Hatton (who is a large supporter of the newspaper), which raised over £1600.

In September 2006 it was decided that the newspaper should become a quarterly edition.
