From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haughley Castle was situated in the village of Haughley, some 4 Km north-west of the town of Stowmarket, Suffolk (grid reference TM025624).
It is also been known as, or has been recorded in historical documents as Haganet, Hawghlee or Hegenoth Castle. It was a motte and bailey castle which was abandoned in 1173 during the revolt of 1173-1174.
The surviving motte, which stands at 80 feet tall with a diameter of 80 feet at the top, is one of the largest surviving mottes in Britain.
