"Hate It or Love It" is the second official (third overall) single off of rapper The Game's debut album entitled The Documentary. The song was blocked from the #1 position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart by The Game's fellow G-Unit member at the time, 50 Cent (who is also featured in this song), with his song "Candy Shop" (featuring Olivia).
The track uses a sample from the song "Rubber Band" performed by The Trammps on their legendary "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" album.
"Hate It or Love It" was nominated at the Grammy Awards of 2006 for both Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, but lost both awards to Kanye West's "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" and the Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk With My Heart", respectively.
[edit] Music Video
The music video's setting alternates between New York City and Los Angeles. The video showcases the rough childhoods of 50 Cent and The Game. It shows where they come from, what it was like living in their neighborhoods, and the struggles they overcame as kids to become rappers. Two kids portray them in their youth, and in one scene these two children are caught spraying "N.W.A." on a wall and get arrested by two policemen.
This video was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards of 2005 for Best Rap Video, but lost to the clip for Ludacris' song "Number One Spot".
[edit] Remixes
There have been a several remixes done of the track. One of them appears on 50 Cent's album The Massacre as a remix featuring other G-Unit members, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, and Tony Yayo. The first time the chorus is sung in this version, it's the same as in the original, but every time the chorus is sung after that, 50 Cent's line is followed by another member of G-Unit singing what was originally the Game's line. While 50 Cent's opening verse and bridge are included in this version, The Game's second verse is removed and replaced with new lyrics. In the remix each G-Unit Member(Lloyd Banks,Young Buck and Tony Yayo) explains their hard childhood and early years. Another remix was featured on Mary J. Blige's multi-platinum album The Breakthrough entitled "MJB Da MVP", with 50 cent rapping the first part of the chorous. There is also a remix on You Know What It Is Vol. 3 remastered into a diss towards G-Unit called "Hate It or Love It (Street RMX)". Here, The Game's second verse from the G-Unit remix is modified with new lyrics in order to insult the G-Unit members.
Papoose has recorded a freestyle over the isntrumental track on his mixtape "Art & War".
