Haslar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Haslar is the name of the area at the southern tip of Gosport, Hampshire which takes its name from two Anglo-Saxon words: haesel, meaning hazel, and ora, meaning bank. It was a bank of hazel strewn on marshy grounds around the creek to make it passable and habitable in olden times that gave it its name.

The location principally has the Royal Hospital Haslar (previously the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar) and also HM YOI Haslar which is now a detention centre for immigrants.
