Hello Harlowraman, I would like say something about the reply you had kept for my warning message. You do not edit the warning message there itself when you reply for it. You actually do not have the right to edit any message kept in anyone's talk page. I know that you did it simply because you do not have much knowledge of it since you are new. This normally happens and do not worry about it much. Anyway, I hope you will do it properly next time with your replies and also you should sign at the end of your message. Do feel free to ask me regarding any problem and I will happy help you. Happy editing!!! ĽąĦĩŘǔ_Қ♪  (Ŧ) 04:02, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

 • His name is Palanivel Rajan spelt Palanivel not Palianivel as in P. T. R. Palianivel Rajan.Secondly his father was P. T. Rajan who also a ex chief minister which could led to confusion and in the press and media he is known as Palanivel Rajan hence redirected the page to Palanivel Rajan. thanks Harlowraman
Thanks Harlowraman. It should be P. T. R. Palanivel Rajan then. That's how he's known most in Madurai. Also, that's per WP:MOS. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 09:53, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
I've moved it to P. T. R. Palanivel Rajan. Thanks for pointing out, didn't notice the error before. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 09:56, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

 • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

[edit] Re:help needed regarding images

(IANAL)The following is my understanding of the image copyright policy here. Anyone else reading this message, please feel free to correct any discrepancies.

"For [a] famous personality, in the absence of a free-alternative, if the image is irreplaceable (the person is dead or the person is involved in an event that won't happen again), you could use a fair-use licensing. Stamps are not allowed. An image simply showing what the person looks like is not allowed."

Before uploading a fairuse image, make sure it satisfies all the points on Wikipedia:Fair use criteria. Also read Wikipedia:Fair_use#Counterexamples.

So you can take a picture on the internet, and upload it as fair-use with rationale on English Wikipedia. Uploading it as anything else is a copyright violation and the image will get deleted. For example :Image:M karunanidhi 20060526.jpg, ==Source== Source: http://www.tn.gov.in/tnassembly/mkarunanidhi.htm (Governement of Tamil Nadu) ==Licensing== M. Karunanidhi ==Fairuse in List of Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and M. Karunanidhi== In the above, the rationale is explained with the use of a template since we have thousands of photos taken from the Indian state or central government pages. Striked out much of this because all politician images are getting deleted soon. The same can be done with any other source, by explaining the rationale in plain text like in Image:Ritwik ghatak.jpg.

Summary
Licensing
Ritwik Ghatak

Rationale for use in Ritwik Ghatak
* it illustrates the person in question,
* it is a historically significant photo of a famous individual,
* in the absence of a free alternative,
* the image is low resolution and of no larger and of no higher quality than is necessary for the illustration of an article, and the use of the image on Wikipedia is not expected to decrease the value of the copyright,
* its inclusion in the article adds significantly to the articles

When uploading a image, leave the license combo box as None. After the upload is complete, edit the image page and add the full text (summary, licensing and rationale). I would stick to 1 fair-use picture per article.

So for all copyrighted pictures, use fairusein templates and add a fairuse rationale. For fair-use images, I wouldn't mind if someone comes by, feels fair-use does not apply and deletes the image. I usually do not contest those. But if you do all the above, there a fair-chance of the image staying.

You should treat any image that is not explicitly released per GDFL/creative commons, as a copyrighted image.

Pictures on the internet that have been released under GDFL/creative commons can be uploaded to Commons so that other language Wikipedias can use the same.

As soon as a free-image is available, the fair-use image must be deleted.

Hope the above helps. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 20:24, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright problems with Image:Karunanidhi111.jpg

An image that you uploaded, Image:Karunanidhi111.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

You claim permission, but the website claims "Copyrights © 2004-2005 Sun Network. All rights reserved." For reference, I believe you were referring to Sun TV (India) Dgies 02:57, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

No I am using a screenshot of the arrest. This was telecast across all television channels .Copyright is for the programmes. Please correct if i am wrong .I am using just images from the arrest taken from television.Harlowraman
Copyright applies both to the program, and to every single frame of that program. TV screenshots are fair use when discussing the TV program itself, not for articles about the subject of the program. For example, a CNN screenshot of George Bush would be fair use in an article about CNN, but would nto be fair use in an article about George Bush. Please see Wikipedia:Fair use or Template:Tv-screenshot. -- Dgies 03:19, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks.I have removed the image .Now SUN TV is owned by the Maran family and Karunanidhi .Harlowraman

[edit] Hi

Hi my friend. Most of your edits I think were excellent so WELL-DONE- Good Job. But the Nawar Singh has been expelled from the Congress for illegal activities such as the corruption for UN oil for food program. He has big problem with Congress including Mrs Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and other congress leader because they did not hide the corruption done by him so putting anything up by him is POV and potentially libellous we don't want the Indian government sueing Wikipedia and us. And the wording should be encyclopedic none emotional. But everything else you did excellent so WELL-DONE.--Indian50 04:16, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006

Project News
 • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
 • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
 • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

 • Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.

[edit] Re: NPOV I am surprised Hereditary Education Policy

I am see you have contributed a lot to Wikipedia and you a regular patroller of Wikipedia.WELL DONE.It is due to efforts of people like you that the site runs .THANKS A LOT.Yesterday my talk Harlowraman was vandalised by someone asking me to delete this article which I felt was wrong. He simply wants the article removed.I have asked the person who vandalised this page 9 times including 3 times today. To do a positive edit by describing your point of view regarding the Educational system reforms of Rajaji between 1952-1954 which includes Kula Kalvi thittam and not Negative edits ie by removing content. Please provide his point of view with citations. He has not added a word only deleted contents 6 times. It is in the Notice board for India-related topics ,why raise NPOV now ?.The person vandalising it has no knowledge about Educational system reforms of Rajaji between 1952-1954 and just wants to vandalise it.Why add NPOV ?Actually I have asked for protection for the page.It seems to reward him.Further I believe only if there is libellous content or if someone with knowledge of Educational system reforms of Rajaji between 1952-1954 raised any objection.which I feel is not there in this article. Please correct me if I am wrong,I would welcome it. Further The official government site is http://www.tn.gov.in/government.htm .The offical government site is not updated before the 1990's.You can check this by visiting the site. hence not able to give government references.Harlowraman 13:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Haha, man... I'm just an RC Patroller that happened to run across your page. About all I'm doing is trying to get it some help now. I have no knowledge of Indian topics so I can't really contribute to the NPOV discussion or judge on content, which is why I'm hoping the post on the Indian related topics noticeboard will help. Anyway, best of luck sorting all that out. – Lantoka (talk) 18:34, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Biography

I'm afraid that having just positive edits to a biography violates WP:NPOV. If the person is adding credible cited information, it can remain on the article. Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:58, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree with you fully that the problem that the information is libellous and without any citation.I fully agree Positive edits with credible cited information is should be added and both points of view should be allowed. My question was about libellous content withour citation Harlowraman 08:05, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Mkstalin1.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Mkstalin1.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Devayaniw.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Devayaniw.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then you need to specify who owns the copyright, please. If you got it from a website, then a link to the website where it was taken from with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:19, 18 January 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 17:19, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Devayaniw.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Devayaniw.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 17:19, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 1 - January 2007

Project News
 • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of WP India to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
 • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, Hindu Links now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Periyarnew.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Periyarnew.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use.

Thank you. Fritz Saalfeld (Talk) 17:09, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image tagging for Image:Cnannadurai.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Cnannadurai.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Srilankabeslan.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Srilankabeslan.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:09, 12 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Rebelguys2 talk 02:09, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 2 - March 2007

Project News
 • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([1]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [2]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
 • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.

 • More generally, certain Indian users have recently been subject to real life harassment by banned users, etc. If this is affecting you in real life, please do not hesitate to contact Wikimedia board members for assistance, or ask a senior Wikipedian to solicit help on your behalf if required.

 • Translation Department: Can you read and write any languages of India? Do you know multiple languages and are looking to keep your skills at a high level or improve them? If so, the Translation Depeartment may be for you!

The translation department of the India WikiProject aims to utilize high-quality non-English material related to India for the goals of the project. This includes both translating articles from and to other-language Wikipedias as well as assisting contributors with non-English sources. The department aims to provide services in transliteration, formulating scripts for various languages, as well as translating articles from one language to another and validating sources in other languages to that of the encyclopedia article. If you are looking for a friendly translator here is your go-to point. Currently, we are still seeking representation for Kashmiri, Nepali, Oriya, Sindhi and Tulu, as well as reinforcements in all other languages.
