The company was floated on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1987. Harvey Norman holds a current market capitalisation of $4.17 billion as at 30 June 2006. [edit] History
The origins of the Harvey Norman brand can be traced back to 1961 when entrepreneurs Gerry Harvey and Ian Norman founded Norman Ross Discounts. Norman Ross Discounts grew to 42 stores throughout New South Wales and Queensland during the next 20 years. The business was sold in 1982. That same year, Gerry Harvey and Ian Norman started their next venture, Harvey Norman, a large retailer of electrical, computer, furniture and bedding goods.
